This thesis is an attempt to reflect on the emotional confucianism seen in Yulgok YiYi's writings, while paying attention to the concept of 'tolerance', which implies 'recognition of difference' and 'respect for difference'. Yulgok's multifaceted thoughts, which constituted an axis of Confucianism in Joseon, were divided into likes and dislikes according to the gaze of the beholder, and he became the subject of right and wrong at the center of controversy. Yulgok's the emotional confucianism is based on deep advocacy, respect, and trust for 'life'. Allowing and connecting the meeting of beings is communication and change, and it is also communication and communication. In this reciprocal mutual process, a ‘horizon of empathy’ is created, and the possibility of our coexistence here and now is also prepared. Therefore, exploring the topography of Joseon society in the 16th century described in Yulgok's writings at the boundary between tolerance and intolerance, this discussion does not remain merely as a past explanation of an aspect of Confucianism's life. This discussion means that it is connected to the contemporary critical mind of 'now-here'.

이 글은 ‘다름의 인정’과 ‘차이의 존중’을 함축하는 ‘관용’ 개념에 유념하면 서 율곡 이이의 저술에 보이는 유학적 감성 세계를 성찰하려는 시도이다. 조 선유학의 한 축을 구성했던 율곡의 다채로운 사유는 ‘바라보는 자’의 시선에 따라 好惡가 엇갈렸고, 그는 논란의 중심에서 是非의 대상이 되기도 했다. 율곡은 의견의 다름을 포용하지 않고 가치의 차이를 용납하지 않았던 ‘불관 용’의 세상에서, 집단적 편견에 저항하면서 자신의 목소리를 내려 했다. 이러한 율곡의 유학적 감성 세계는 ‘생명’에 대한 깊은 옹호와 존중과 신 뢰에 토대를 두고 있다. 존재들의 만남을 허여하고 연결하는 것이 許通이자 變通이며, 疏通이자 交與’이기도 하다. 이 교호적 상호 과정에서 ‘공감의 지 평’이 생성되고, 지금-여기 우리의 공존 가능성도 마련된다. 율곡의 저술에 기술된 16세기 조선사회의 지형을 관용과 불관용의 경계에서 탐구한 이 글 은, 단지 유학적 삶의 한 양상에 대한 과거적 해명에 머물지 않고, ‘지금-여 기’라는 동시대의 문제의식에 접속되어 있다.
