Although the principle of separation and non-interference between politics and religion is ideal, it is also an undeniable problem that politics and religion are interrelated in forming the basic philosophy and ideology of civil society. Also, in the process of democratization in Korea, religion cannot be ignored because of its many connections to politics. Looking back at the political history of Korea, it is especially true that previous governments before democratization tried to gain political support through the use or control of religion. This paper examines the political role of religion after the Korean War in relation to the presidential election, and intends to discuss the recent importance of religion’s political role and the political role and tasks of religion from the perspective of ‘social power’.

정치와 종교가 상호 분리, 불간섭 원칙을 유지하는 것이 이상적이지만, 현실적으로 정치와 종교가 시민사회의 기본 철학과 이념을 형성하는데 상호연관성을 띠고 영향을 미쳐왔다는 것 역시 부정할 수 없는 문제이다. 또한, 한국의 민주화 과정에서도 종교가 정치와 많은 연관을 맺 어왔다는 사실을 무시할 수는 없을 것이다. 한국의 정치역사에 있어 민주화 이전의 역대 정부 들은 종교의 역할을 이용하고자 하였으며, 종교를 정권의 통제하에 두고 정치적 지지를 얻고자 노력했다. 본 논문은 한국전쟁 이후 종교의 정치적 역할을 대선과 관련지어 살펴보고, 최근 종 교의 정치적 역할의 비중과 ‘소셜 파워(Social Power)’의 관점에서 종교의 정치적 역할과 과제 에 대해 논의하였다.
