This study extracted images of metaverse musicals, which have recently attracted attention, through semantic differential method and analyzed image differences according to characteristic factors of audience. The image of the metaverse musical was measured on a five-step scale for 36 adjectives, and was identified through a survey of 326 men and women in their teens to 30s. Research shows that the first. Representative images of metaverse musicals include new, novel, original, free, curious, interesting, and diverse etc. Second, the images of metaverse musical were divided into five characteristic factors: ‘artistry’, ‘novelty’, ‘functionality’, ‘intimacy’, ‘reality’ and ‘artistry’ accounted for the largest portion among them. Third, although ‘artistry’ accounted for the largest proportion of the image factors of the metaverse musical, ‘novelty’ and ‘functionality’ were evaluated most positively. Fourth, women were more positive about the ‘reality’ of metaverse musicals than men, and teenagers were more positive about ‘functionality’ and ‘reality’ than other age groups. Fifth, the group that experienced the metaverse platform and metaverse musical was relatively more positive about ‘artistry’, ‘functionality’, ‘intimacy’ and ‘reality’ than the group that did not experience it. Sixth, the group that had intention to watch the metaverse musical was very positive about the ‘novelty’ and ‘functionality’ of the metaverse musical, while the group that had no intention of watching was negative about ‘artistry’, ‘intimacy’ and ‘reality’. In conclusion, in order to attract existing musical audiences in the future, metaverse musicals need technological development and creative efforts to reduce negative perceptions of ‘artistry’, ‘intimacy’ and ‘reality’ as a comprehensive performing art beyond ‘novelty’ and ‘functionality’.

본 연구는 최근 관심을 끌고 있는 메타버스 뮤지컬에 대해 관객들이 가지는 이미지를 의미분별법(Semantic Differential Method)을 통해 파악하고, 관객의 성별, 연령, 뮤지컬 관람 유무와 함께 메타버스 이용 경험, 메타버스 뮤지컬 관람 경험 및 관람 의도 등의 변수들에 따른 이미지 차이를 분석하였다. 메타버스 뮤지컬에 대한 이미지는 36개의 형용사를 통해 추출하였으며 10대 ~30대 남녀 326명을 대상으로 한 설문조사를 통해 파악하였다. 연구 결과 첫째. 메타버스 뮤지컬에 대한 이미지는 새롭다, 신기하다, 독창적이다, 자유롭다, 궁금하다, 흥미롭다, 다양하다 등이 대표적이었다. 둘째, 메타버스 뮤지컬에 대한 이미지는 ‘예술성’, ‘참신성’, ‘기능성’, ‘친밀성’, ‘실재성’의 5개 요인으로 설명되었으며, 그중에서도 ‘예술성’이 가장 큰 비중을 차지하였다. 셋째, 메타버스 뮤지컬에 대한 이미지 중에서 ‘참신성’과 ‘기능성’이 가장 긍정적으로 평가되었다. 넷째, 여성이 남성보다 메타버스 뮤지컬의 ‘참신성’에 대해 보다 더 긍정적이고, 10대가 20~30대 연령층에 비해 ‘기능성’과 ’실재성‘에 대해 보다 더 긍정적이었다. 다섯째, 메타버스 플랫폼과 메타버스 뮤지컬을 경험한 집단은 경험하지 못한 집단에 비해 ‘예술성’, ‘기능성’, ‘친밀성’, ‘실재성’에 대해 상대적으로 보다 더 긍정적이었다. 여섯째. 메타버스 뮤지컬 관람 의도가 있다는 집단은 메타버스 뮤지컬의 ‘참신성’과 ‘기능성’에 대해 매우 긍정적인 반면 관람 의도가 없다는 집단은 ‘예술성’, ‘친밀성’, ‘실재성’에 대해 부정적이었다. 결론적으로, 무대에서 실연으로 이루어졌던 기존의 뮤지컬을 메타버스라는 가상현실로 확대해 나기기 위해서는 메타버스 뮤지컬이 가지는 ‘참신성’과 ‘기능성’을 뛰어넘어 ‘예술성’과 ‘친밀성’, ‘실재성’에 대한 부정적인 인식을 줄일 수 있는 기술적인 발전과 창의적인 노력이 필요할 것으로 사료 된다.
