Hardin proposes an ethical position that compares the Earth to a lifeboat floating on the sea, namely, the ethics of a lifeboat. Just as people aboard lifeboats need to turn a blind eye to others in the sea and escape for survival, the core argument of lifeboats ethics is that developing countries should now be allowed to die naturally as responsible for irresponsible reproduction. Hardin's argument for consequentialism is strong because the actions that the guidelines for lifeboat ethics demand from us are harrowing, but we cannot accept the consequences of moving toward everyone's destruction. However, Hardin's lifeboat analogy has certain limitations in that it actually contains important details about the actual Earth's situation or distorted premises. Given the rational consideration of the real situation, not the metaphor, it can be a duty for developed countries to help developing countries create democratic political and social cultures.

하딘은 지구를 바다 위에 떠 있는 구명정에 비유하는 윤리적 입장, 즉 구명정 윤리를 제안한다. 해양 사고로 구조가 필요한 상황에서 구 명정에 탑승한 사람들은 바다 속의 다른 사람들을 외면하고 생존을 위 해 그곳을 빠져 나가야 하듯이 현재 선진국도 개발도상국이 무책임한 출산에 대한 책임으로 자연적인 사망에 이르도록 방치해야 한다는 것 이 구명정 윤리의 핵심 주장이다. 구명정 윤리의 지침이 우리에게 요 구하는 행동은 참혹한 것이지만 모두의 파멸로 나아가는 결과를 수용 할 수 없기에 하딘의 결과주의 논증은 강력하다. 하지만 하딘의 구명 정 비유는 실제 지구의 상황에 관한 중요한 세부사항을 누락하거나 왜 곡한 전제를 포함한다는 점에서 한계를 가진다. 비유가 아닌 현실을 합리적으로 고려한다면, 개발도상국이 민주적인 정치·사회 문화를 조 성하도록 지원하는 일이 선진국에게 의무로 주어질 수 있다.
