Historically, ‘ethnicity’ and ‘nationalism’ have functioned as a logic of resistance against interference and aggression by the great powers, but in the flow of globalization, they have been excluded on the grounds that they hinder universal human rights or the value of respect for diversity. However, national identity based on democratic citizenship can be a constructive force for unification. The purpose of this study is to clarify the positive meaning of national identity in relation to the unification of North and South Korea, and to examine unification education in a way in which students can cultivate a sound national identity. In particular, this paper examines the content elements of unification education reflected in the elementary school moral education curriculum based on national identity, and suggest the way for unification education in the moral education curriculum.

역사적으로 ‘민족’과 ‘민족주의’는 열강의 간섭과 침략에 맞서는 저항 의 논리로 기능했음에도 불구하고 세계화의 흐름 속에서 보편적 인권 이나 다양성 존중의 가치를 저해한다는 이유로 배척되어왔다. 그러나 민주 시민성을 전제로 한 민족 정체성은 남북통일을 위해서 건설적 힘 이 될 수 있다. 본 연구는 남북통일과 관련하여 민족 정체성이 지닌 긍정적 의미를 밝히고, 학생들이 건전한 민족 정체성을 함양할 수 있 는 방향에서 통일교육을 고찰하는데 목적이 있다. 그중에서도 초등학 교 도덕과 교육과정에 반영된 통일교육 내용 요소에 대해서 민족 정체 성개념에 비추어 살펴보고, 도덕과 통일교육이 나가야 할 길을 제언 한다.
