The purpose of this study is to propose implications for the establishment of school democracy in middle school and the validity of the civic character theory by verifying the influence of character, democratic school environment, and the interaction effect of the two factors that affect school democracy. In this study, 1,525 middle school students from 6 schools in Chungbuk were surveyed on school democracy, character, and democratic environment. Influencing variables of school democracy were investigated through regression analysis, and the moderating effect of the school environment on the relationship between character and school democracy was investigated using Hayes' process macro. The results of the study were the following three. First, there is a positive correlation between character and the democratic environment of school in the degree of school democracy perceived by middle school students, and it is an influencing variable. Second, the relative influence of character on school democracy was investigated. Responsibility (β = 0.18), self-regulation (β = 0.11), honesty (β = 0.09), sincerity (β = 0.08), consideration (β = 0.08), courtesy (β = 0.08), followed by justice (β = 0.08). Third, the democratic school environment was a factor that had a positive impact on school democracy and was a moderating variable that had a positive impact on school democracy by interacting with character. Therefore, the results of this study support the overlapping or complementary relationship between democratic citizenship education and character education. In addition to creating a democratic school environment, it was suggested that character education could also contribute to the establishment of school democracy.

본 연구의 목적은 학교민주주의에 영향을 미치는 인성, 민주적 학교 환경, 그리고 두 요인의 상호작용 효과의 영향력을 검증하여 중학교에 서의 학교민주주의의 정착과 시민적 인성 이론의 타당성에 대한 시사 점을 제안하는 것이다. 이에 본 연구는 충북 소재의 4개의 중학교 1-2 학년 학생 1,525명을 대상으로 학교민주주의, 인성, 민주적 환경에 관한 설문조사를 하였다. 회귀분석을 통해 학교민주주의 영향변인을 조사하 고, Hayes의 process macro를 이용하여 인성과 학교민주주의 관계에 미치는 학교환경의 조절효과를 조사하였다. 연구결과는 다음의 세 가지였다. 첫째, 중학생이 인식하는 학교민주 주의 정도에 인성과 학교의 민주적 환경 모두 정적 상관이 있으며, 영 향을 미치는 변인이었다. 둘째, 학교민주주의에 미치는 인성의 상대적 영향력을 조사하니 책임(β= 0.18), 자기조절(β= 0.11), 정직(β= 0.09), 성실(β= 0.08), 배려(β= 0.08), 예의(β= 0.08), 정의(β= 0.08) 순으로 나 타났다. 셋째, 민주적 학교환경은 학교민주주의에 정적 영향을 미치는 요인으로서 인성과 상호작용하여 학교민주주의에 영향을 미치는 조절 변인이었다. 이에 본 연구 결과는 민주 시민교육과 인성교육의 중첩적 관계나 상호보완적 관계를 지지하며. 민주주의적 학교환경 조성 이외 에도 인성교육도 학교민주주의 정착에 기여할 수 있다고 제안하였다.
