The modern letter textbook is a textbook for learning the normativeness and relevance of social relationships. Through the examples of letters published here, modern Koreans in the 1920s were able to learn the language, expressions, and emotions that fit the nature of their relationship with the recipient. In that respect, 『Shinchemimun contemporary writings letter writing style(新體美文時文편지투)』 is a material that confirms the contemporary and timely nature of the letter textbook and the contents of the discourses of young people in the 1920s. The letter examples in 『Shinchemimun contemporary writings letter writing style』 are mainly contents exchanged between ‘young people and students’, which is different from the typical letter textbook, which mainly consists of examples between families. First, this thesis examines that the preface of this book presents the self-identity and self-expression of ‘young people, students, and intellectuals’. In addition, we analyzed the specific aspects of this textbook showing the ideal social relationship model for young intellectuals at the time. The ‘youth, student’ ego depicted in 『Shinchemimun contemporary writings letter writing style』 expressed themselves as special and idealized beings and expressed them as intellectual reflections. In addition, the desirable relationship of 'young people and students' was expressed in a special way in which they realized their sense of duty as a 'enlightenment subject' and mutually encouraged and exhorted. This thesis was intended to point out that the textbook was a book that allowed the public to learn ‘talking about oneself’ through the most common and practical genre of writing, ‘letters’. 『Shinchemimun contemporary writings letter writing style』 was a text that made students and youth in the 1920s learn confessional speaking as 'one's skill'.

척독교본은 ‘주요한 사회적 관계란 무엇인지, 그 관계는 어떤 관계여야 하며 어떤 태도와 표현, 언어와 감정이 적합한지’를 학습하게 해주는 규범적 자료이다. 그런 점에서 『시문편지투』는 척독교본의 당대성과 시의성 및 1920년대 청년 담론의 내용을 확인하게 해주는 자료이다. 『시문편지투』는 일반적인 척독교본이 가족 대상의 관계를 중심으로 하는 것과 달리 ‘學友, 平交, 先輩後進’을 주요 관계로 설정하고 있다. 본고는 이 텍스트가 ‘청년, 학생, 지식인’의 감정과 태도, 정체성에 대한 규범적 방향성을 제시하고 있으며, 나아가 이들의 주요한 사회적 관계에 대하여 이상적인 관계성 모델을 보여주고자 했다고 보고 그 구체적인 양상을 분석했다. 우선 『시문편지투』의 평교간 서간문 예문들은 이 시대의 ‘청년, 학생’ 자아를 특별히 선별된 자로서의 개별성과 높은 지적 기준, 자부심을 가진 존재로 그려내고 있다. 이들은 번민과 고뇌, 상념을 통해 다른 이들과 구별되는 특별하고 이상화된 존재로 그려지고 있으며, 자기의 진정성과 인격 수준, 생각의 깊이를 보여주는 존재이자 자기에 대한 진실을 돌아보는 지성적 성찰자로 이상화되어 표현되고 있다. 또한 『시문편지투』의 서간문은 ‘청년, 학생’의 바람직한 관계성을 ‘계몽 주체로서의 사명감을 깨우치고 상호 권면’하는 특별한 관계이자 상호 인정의 정서가 깔린 내부적 동질성을 공유한 관계로 전제하고 있다. 이들은 ‘젊음과 학업, 수양과 성장’이라는 요소를 동질적인 것으로 공유하고 있으며 이 범주에 ‘청년, 학생’의 연장선상에 있는 젊은 지식인 모델로 ‘선생’의 정체성이 공존하고 있음도 지적했다. 본고는 이러한 분석을 통해 척독교본이 궁극적으로 ‘편지’라는 가장 일상적이고 실용적인 문종의 학습을 통해 대중들에게 ‘자기에 대한 말하기’를 익히게 하는 책이었음을 지적하고자 했다. 그런 점에서 『시문편지투』는 당시의 학생, 청년에게 고백적 말하기, 즉 ‘자기의 기술’로서의 고백의 양식을 학습하게 하는 매개 역할을 했던 텍스트였다고 할 수 있다.
