Mugen is a Japanese adaptation of Gu-un-mong. Mugen was serialized in Tokyo Asahi Newspaper[東京朝日新聞] by Komiyama Tenko[小宮山天香, 1855∼1930]. The serialization, which had started on September 18, 1894, stopped at the end of episode 25, but on April 26, 1895, it was resumed under the titleMugen the 2nd Part and continued with episode 28. It’s a total of 53 episodes, but considering that Komiyama Tenko himself said that he had ‘stopped’ serialization, episode 53 is not the end. As a result, the serialization ofMugen was not finished. However, the existence value of this work should not be denied just because the series was not finished. This is because the Joseon novel Gu-un-mong received the attention of Komiyama Tenko and the people around him and was serialized in the representative Japanese newspaper, Tokyo Asahi Newspaper. It is difficult to grasp the specific reason at present, but whatever the reason, it is clear that Komiyama Tenko recognized Gu-un-mong as a work that was meaningful enough to be serialized in a newspaper. And through the aspect of the adaptation, I tried to get closer to the intention by understanding how Komiyama Tenko tried to change Gu-un-mong. Through this, we will be able to confirm the various aspects of Gu-un-mong that are freely transformed by the various demands of the enjoyment class. In the meantime, research on Gu-un-mong put a lot of effort into correcting the authority and status of the original copy. Based on this achievement, it is necessary to examine how the ever-changing appearance of Gu-un-mong was handed down in the future. At this time, acceptance and transformation abroad will be an important axis.

<무겐(夢幻)>은 <구운몽>을 일본어로 번안한 작품이다. <무겐>은 고미야마 덴코(小宮山天香, 1855∼1930)가 『도쿄 아사히신문[東京朝日新聞]』에 연재하였다. 1894년 9월 18일에 시작된 연재는 25회를 끝으로 중단되었다가, 1895년 4월 26일에 <무겐 후편>이라는 제목으로 연재를 재개하여 28회를 이어 나갔다. 총 53회인 셈인데, 고미야마 덴코 스스로 연재를 ‘중단’했다고 말한 것을 보면 53회가 끝은 아니다. 결과적으로 <무겐>의 연재는 마무리되지 못한 것이다. 그러나 연재를 끝맺지 못했다고 해서 이 작품의 존재 가치가 부정되어서는 안 된다. 조선의 소설 <구운몽>이 고미야마 덴코와 그 주변 인물들의 관심을 받고, 일본을 대표하는 『도쿄 아사히신문』에 연재되었기 때문이다. 현재로서는 구체적인 이유를 파악 하기 힘들지만, 그 이유가 무엇이든 고미야마 덴코가 <구운몽>을 신문에 연재할 만큼 유의미한 작품으로 인식했다는 사실은 분명할 것이다. 그리고 번안의 양상을 통해 고미야마 덴코가 <구운몽>을 어떻게 변개하려 했는지 파악하여, 그 의도에 좀 더 가까이 접근해보고자 했다. 이를 통해 우리는 <구운몽>이 향유층의 다양한 요구에 의해 자유롭게 변모하는 다채로운 양상의 일면을 확인할 수 있을 것이다. 그간 <구운몽> 연구는 선본의 권위와 위상을 바로잡는데 많은 역량을 투여하였다. 이 성과를 바탕으로 앞으로는 <구운몽>이 전승되면서 얼마나 변화무쌍한 모습을 보였는지 고찰할 필요가 있다. 이때 해외에서의 수용과 변용은 중요한 한 축이 될 것이다.
