Active shooting can occur in any instance when offenders can utilize guns or rifles for their purpose of murdering mass crowd. This study examined the factors of active shooting on mass murder in the United States. The current study used the active shooting information announced by the Federal Bureau of Investigation on active shootings between 2000 and 2018. The factor were divided in to internal factors (perpetrator suicide, relationship with victims) and external factors(firepower, gun law). A logistic regression was used to examine the effect of factors of mass murder by active shooing on whether or not mass murder occurred. Findings indicate that, the suicidal attempts of perpetrator after the shooting and the firepower of the gun carried by the shooter at the during the crime increased the possibility of mass murder. Contrary to the expectations of the current study, relationship with the victims did not have statistically significant effect. Regarding gun regulatory laws, the stronger the regulations were the higher were the possibility of mass murder.

총기 범죄 및 사고는 일부 국가에 국한된 것이 아닌 총기가 존재하는 어느 국가에서나 발생할 수 있다. 본 연구는 총기난사 사건이 대량살인에 미치는 요인을 탐색하고 관련 정보를 활용하여 총기난사를 예방하거나 이에 관한 대응을 마련하는데 기초적 자료를 제공하고자 한다. 이를 위하여 본 연구는 다음 과 같이 진행된다. 첫째, 총기난사 관련 정의와 기존문헌 검토를 통하여 총기난사와 관련된 주요요인을 도출하였다. 둘째, 앞서 제시된 주요요인을 바탕으로 가설을 제시하였다. 셋째, 미국 연방수사국(Federal Bureau of Investigation)의 2000년부터 2018년 총기난사 데이터를 활용하여 가해자의 자살여부, 피해자 와의 관계, 총기화력, 총기법이 대량살인 여부에 미치는 영향을 이항 로지스틱 회귀분석(binomial logistic regression analysis)을 이용하여 분석하였다. 분석결과, 가해자가 총격 후 자살하는 경우, 총격범 이 범행 시 휴대한 총기의 화력, 총기휴대와 관련된 규제 법률 등이 대량살인에 유의미한 영향을 미치는 것을 확인하였다. 하지만 총기법률의 경우 기대한 바와 달리 총기법이 강할수록 대량살인이 증가하는 현상으로 나타나 기존연구들과 맥락을 달리했다. 이를 바탕으로 정책적･실무적 함의를 제시하였다.
