This paper analyzes the folktales of Pyeongchang, a representative mountain village area of Korea, focusing on their treatment of disasters, and investigates the response patterns of the mountain village community implied in the narrative structures. The mountain village community of Pyeongchang, formed around the economic center of its traditional market, has survived for ages and passed down various tales by word of mouth. In these tales, the patterns of disasters such as drought, Hohwan (disasters caused by tigers), and distress unavoidable in mountain village life are embodied concretely and allegorically. These disasters are likely to lead to isolation, another type of disaster, considering the characteristics of mountain village life. In that respect, the tales that the mountain village community of Pyeongchang has orally transmitted can be regarded as an expression of people’s willingness to settle down as members of the community without being isolated. Cows and dokkaebis, often appearing in the folktales of Pyeongchang, are symbols of the fear of isolation and the will of settlement. The key point of communality in the folktales of Pyeongchang is the earnest will of settlement and the humor with which this will is expressed in the narrative structure.

본고는 우리나라의 대표적 산촌 지역인 평창의 설화를 재난이라는 측면에 초점 을 맞추어 분석하고 그런 재난의 서사 구조가 내포하고 있는 산촌 공동체의 대응 양상을 구명해 보았다. 평창의 산촌 공동체는 전통 시장을 경제적인 구심점 삼아 형성되어 존속하면서 다양한 설화를 구비전승하였다. 이 설화에는 산촌 생활에서 마주칠 수밖에 없는 가뭄, 호환, 조난과 같은 재난 양상이 구체적, 비유적으로 형상화되어 있다. 이런 재난들은 산촌의 거주 특성상 또 다른 재난인 고립으로 이어지기 쉽다. 그런 측면 에서 평창의 산촌 공동체가 구비전승한 설화는 고립되지 않고 공동체의 일원으로 서 정주하고자 하는 의지의 표출로 볼 수 있다. 평창 설화에 자주 등장하는 소와 도깨비는 이런 고립의 두려움과 정주에의 의지를 나타내는 기표이다. 평창 설화에 담긴 공동체성의 핵심은 정주하는 삶에의 절박한 의지와 그 의지 를 서사로 녹여 구조화하는 해학이다.
