We will briefly examine the relationship between physicalism and mental realism. The mental realist argues that the mind is real. Physicalism holds that everything is physical. However, since the mind is non-physical, mental realism and physicalism seem incompatible. Unlike dualism and eliminativism, which s ee t h is t h eoretical t ension a s r eal r ath er t h an s eeming, s ome ph ysicalists a rgue t h at t he unnatural m atch ing of these t h eories is only superficial and say that physicalism and mental realism are compatible. According to non-reductionism, physicalism can be maintained where the mind exists, and according to reductionism, the mind exists when there are just physical things. After all, both non-reductionist physicalism and reductionist physicalism claim to be able to maintain both physicalism and mental realism, s o h ow i s t h is p ossible? H ere I will s h ow t h at i f the d istinction between substantive physicalism and attribute physicalism, between eliminative reduction and conservative reduction, and between existence and reality becomes clear, the compatibility advocated by the two camps is secured. However, when the criteria for the reality of the mind are clearly revealed, the two physicalisms are in different dialectic situations. Insofar as mental causality is taken as the criterion of reality, non- reductionist physicalism seems to find it difficult to fit naturally with mental realism, contrary to common expectations and assessments. Thus, from a purely compatibility point of view, it turns out that the reductionist position is more favorable.

여기서는 물리주의와 심성 실재론 사이의 관계에 대해서 간단히 살피고자 한다. 심성 실 재론자는 심성이 실재한다고 주장한다. 물리주의자는 모든 것이 물리적이라고 주장한다. 하 지만 심성이 비물리적이기에 심성 실재론과 물리주의는 양립 불가능해 보인다. 이런 이론적 긴장이 겉보기에 그치지 않고 실제로 성립한다고 보는 이원주의나 제거주의와 달리, 어떤 물리주의자들은 이 어색한 이론 간의 짝짓기가 겉보기일 뿐이라고 주장하며 물리주의와 심 성 실재론이 양립가능하다고 말한다. 비환원주의에 따르면 심성이 따로 존재하는 데 물리주 의를 유지할 수 있으며, 환원주의에 따르면 물리적인 것만 있는 데 심성이 존재한다. 결국 비환원주의적 물리주의와 환원주의적 물리주의는 모두 물리주의와 심성 실재론을 모두 유 지할 수 있다고 주장하는데, 어떻게 이런 일이 가능한가? 여기서는 실체 물리주의와 속성 물리주의의 구분, 제거적 환원과 보존적 환원의 구분, 존재와 실재의 구분이 명확해진다면, 두 진영이 주장하는 양립가능성이 확보된다는 점을 보이겠다. 그러나 심성의 실재성 기준을 명확히 드러내면 두 물리주의는 처지가 달라진다. 심성 인과를 실재성의 기준으로 삼는 한, 비환원주의적 물리주의는, 일반적인 기대나 평가와 달리, 심성 실재론과 자연스럽게 어울리 기 어려워지는 듯이 보인다. 이렇듯 순전히 정합성의 관점에서 볼 때 환원주의의 입장이 더 유리하다는 점이 드러난다.
