The establishment and development of the Prussian Academy of Sciences located in Berlin has considerable importance in relation to the formation of K ant's c ritical p h ilosoph y a s w ell a s t he German E nlightenment i n t h e 18th century, but it has hardly been dealt with in previous literatures. Considering this point, this article first examines the origin and development process of the Prussian Royal Academy in the context of intellectual history. Next, the metaphysical controversies triggered by the prize competition of the class of speculative philosophy conducted during the period of reconstruction of the Academy－namely, the controversies around monad, determinism, optimism, philosophical method－are examined. These controversies repeat the confrontation between Newton-Maupertuis and Leibniz-Wolffianism, both inside and outside the Academy, in Germany and Western Europe. From 1747 to the 1760s, the controversial themes of the Prize Question presented by the Academy have also been intensively dealt with in Kant's philosophical writings before the critical period. In view of this, the role of the Academy in Kant's intellectual development should be reconsidered, and the stimulation and influence of the Prussian Academy on the German intellectuals need to be duly evaluated, until the German Enlightenment emerged half a century later as Kant's critical philosophy and German idealism.

베를린에 위치한 프로이센 학술원의 성립과 발전은 18세기 독일 계몽은 물론이고 칸트의 철학적 문제의식의 형성과 관련해서도 상당한 중요성을 지니지만 철학사에서 거의 주목되 지 않았다. 이 점을 고려하여 이 글에서는 먼저 지성사적 맥락에서 프로이센 왕립학술원의 기원과 전개과정을 살펴본다. 다음으로, 학술원의 재건 및 부흥기에 시행된 사변철학부 현 상과제가 촉발한 대표적인 형이상학 논쟁들, 대표적으로 모나드, 결정론, 낙관론, 마지막으 로 철학방법론을 둘러싼 논쟁들 고찰한다. 이 논쟁은 학술원 안팎으로 독일 및 서유럽에서 팽팽히 맞선 뉴턴-모페르튀 진영 대 라이프니츠-볼프 진영의 대결구도를 반복한다. 1747년 부터 1760년대까지 학술원이 제시한 현상과제의 논쟁적 주제들은 또한 비판기 이전의 칸트 의 철학적 저술들에서 중점적으로 다루어져 왔다. 이런 점을 미루어 볼 때, 학술원이 칸트의 지적 발전사에서 갖는 위상은 재고되어야 마땅하며, 뒤늦은 독일의 계몽적 흐름이 반세기 뒤 칸트의 비판철학과 독일관념론으로 분출하기까지 프로이센 학술원이 독일 지성계에 가 한 자극과 영향은 정당하게 평가될 필요가 있다.
