In this paper, the stylistic characteristics of the iron statue of Vairocana Buddha at Borimsa Temple were examined, and the support for and manufacturing process of the statue of the Buddha were considered. Unlike other statues of the Buddha built in the same period, the iron statue of Vairocana Buddha at Borimsa Temple is characterized by its unique images and shapes and unique expression of the stand. The expression of images and shapes revealing three-dimensional effects as such suggests the influence of the iron statues of the Buddha in the Tang age, and the realistic expression of the stand is similar to many statues of monks produced during the same period. Therefore, not only the Iron statue of Vairocana Buddha at Borimsa Temple is important as a work representing the iron statue of the Buddha created in the late Unified Silla period, but also it should be reevaluated as an example that shows the newly formed style of statues of the Buddha newly formed based on the existing traditional styles od statues of the Buddha. On comprehensive examination of the manufacturing process of the iron statue of the Buddha, the contents of the , and the cases of Buddhist services events at the time, it is understood that King Heonan supported the Buddhist service to establish Borimsa Temple for the purpose of ruling the province and Kim Su-jong was the producer who made the statue of Vairocana Buddha while supervising the Buddhist service under the order of King Heon-an. It was presumed that, after purchasing 2,500geuns of pig iron, the raw material for making the iron statue of the Buddha, Kim Soo-jong set up a workshop to cast the statue of the Buddha in the premise of Borimsa Temple, and mobilized the craftsmen who were subordinate to him to make the iron statue of Vairocana Buddha.

본고에서는 보림사 철조비로자나불상의 양식특징을 살펴보고, 불상의 후원과 제작공정에 대해서 고찰하였다. 보림사 철조비로자나불상은 같은 시기에 조성된 다른 불상들과 달리 개성적인 상호와 독특한대의 표현이 특징적이다. 이런 입체감이 드러나는 상호의 표현은 唐代 철불의 영향을 짐작하게 하며, 또 대의는 같은 시기에 제작된 승상들의 사실적인 표현과 흡사하다. 따라서 보림사 철조비로자나불상은 통일신라시대 후기에 조성되는 철불을 대표하는 작품으로서 중요할 뿐만 아니라 기존의 전통적인 불상양식의 바탕 위에 새롭게 형성된 불상양식을 선보이는 예로 재평가되어야 할 것이다. <보림사보조선사창성탑비>의 내용이나 당시 佛事 사례를 종합적으로 규명해보면, 헌안왕이지방을 통치하고자 하는 정치적인 목적 때문에 보림사 창건 불사를 후원하였고, 이 때 김수종은헌안왕의 명으로 불사를 주관하면서 비로자나불상을 조성한 제작자라고 이해된다. 김수종은 철불을 제작할 수 있는 원재료인 선철 2천5백근을 구입한 뒤 보림사 寺域 안에 불상을 주조하는 공방을 마련하고 자신에게 예속되어 있던 장인을 동원하여 철조비로자나불상을 조성하였을 것으로추정하였다.
