It has been argued that museum is not the neutral space. It in reality is the ritual space for disciplining power and ruling order. It has been criticized as an ideological apparatus since new museology. Most all performing arts under ‘tradition’ category have been considered as exhibits of museum, which are unevolved and outdated. This kind of museological prejudice is related to the obsession of ‘modernity’, in which the consciousness of ecological point of view about traditional arts is denied. The root of this museological prejudice in Korea was on the Japanese colonial period, especially ‘colonial view of the history of the Joseon Dynasty’. At that time Korean traditional culture was considered as the primitive, inferior, and uncivilized, which was the contrast to Japanese culture considered as active, superior, and civilized. Iwangjik-A’akbu was a representative institution showing this prejudice in music field. The museological prejudice has ruled not only ‘the past’ but also creation, change, and progress discourses in traditional performing arts, thereby, the renewal through transplant from the West has been over-emphasized, rather than self-healthiness and ecological property of ones own. It is the time that artistic democracy for overcoming this prejudice is called for.

오늘날 한국의 전통예술은 그 속성상 ‘과거를 바라보는 시선’인 박 물관 시선의 영향 하에 있다. 현재 연행되는 예술양식임에도 불구하고 과거의 것으로 여기는 시선이 당연시되는 형편이다. 그런데 전통예술은 또한 보존을 넘어 창조, 변화를 지향한다. 당대성에 대한 고민은 모든 예술양식의 공통된 중요한 문제이지만, 전통예술은 자신의 내적 변화를 통한 당대성이 아니라 서구양식과의 혼종이나 그 직접적 이식을 통해 당대성을 확보하려는 모순적 상황을 보인다. 이는 보존가치와 유산 차 원만이 아니라 창작을 통한 변화의 문제까지 박물관 시선이 지배하고 있다는 점을 보여준다. 이런 박물관 시선에는 뿌리깊은 일제강점기 잔영이 남아있으며, 이제는 그러한 시선의 함정을 넘어서는 차원에서의 예술적 민주주의에 대한 고민이 요구되고 있다.
