The purpose of this study was to examine the process of the rationalization of talismans and incantations, which are shamanistic acts of Donghak, and to determine their public roles. To that end, it considered the relationship between the context of the late Joseon Dynasty, when the plague was prevalent, and the talismans and incantations that Suun Choi Jewoo received through mystical experiences. It then analyzed the process through which the talismans and incantations were established as doctrines, focusing on Max Weber’s concepts of disenchantment(Entzauberung) and rationalization(Rationalisier ung). It was confirmed that the disenchantment of the talisman and incantation did not represent a loss of religiosity or dereligionization. Next, the process through which Hae-wol Choi Sihyung’s original interpretation of the talisman and incantation became the foundation of metaphysical and ethical rationality and the concept of raising God in human bodies as a result of metaphysical and ethical rationalization were addressed. Finally, it was noted that metaphysical and ethical rationalization is the process of changing into practical rationality through the reorganization of the religious body. As COVID-19 significantly impacted individuals and society, experts in various fields observed that after COVID-19, people would live different lives. In response to the question of what people should aspire to if living their lives differently than before COVID-19, experts responded that it was the public role of civil society. This study aimed to establish whether religions fulfilled their public duties by only following and practicing the COVID-19 prevention guidelines that the government ordered. Therefore, this study can serve as an impetus for people seeking public roles as religious people and citizens of a society beyond blessing-invoking and shamanistic faith, which rely on religious leaders’ charisma or seek only personal comfort.

본 연구의 목적은 동학의 주술적 행위인 영부와 주문의 합리화 과정을 고찰하고 공공적 역할에 대하여 모색하는 데 있다. 이를 위하여 수운 최제우가 신비체험을 통해 받은 영부와 주문이 역병이 창궐한 조선 후기의 시대적 상황과 관련이 있음을 살펴본다. 다음으로, 영부와 주문이 교리로 정립되는 과정을 막스 베버의 탈주술화 개념과 합리화 개념을 중심으로 고찰한다. 이를 통해 영부와 주문의 탈주술화가 종교성의 상실이나 탈종교화가 아니라는 것을 확인한다. 다음으로, 영부와 주문에 대한 해월 최시형의 독창적인 해석이 형이상학적·윤리적 합리성의 토대가 되고, 형이상학적·윤리적 합리화의 결과로 양천주 개념이 완성되는 과정을 살펴본다. 마지막으로, 형이상학적·윤리적 합리화가 교단의 재정비를 통해 실천적 합리성으로 변화되는 과정이라는 점을 강조한다. 코로나19(COVID-19)가 개인과 사회에 막대한 영향을 끼치게 되자, 각 분야의 전문가들은 ‘코로나19 이후, 인류는 완전히 다른 삶을 살게 될 것’이라 진단한 바 있다. ‘코로나 이전의 삶과 완전히 다르게 살게 된다면 우리가 지향해야 할 것은 무엇인가’에 대한 물음에 전문가들은 시민사회의 ‘공공적 역할’이라 답했다. 본 연구는 이러한 시대적 요청에 종교가 단지 정부가 지시한 코로나19 예방 수칙을 따르고 실천하는 것만으로 종교의 공공적 의무를 다했다고 대처하는 것에 문제를 제기하고자 한다. 이로써 본 연구는 종교 지도자의 카리스마에 의존하거나 개인의 안위만 추구하는 기복·주술적 신앙을 넘어 종교인이자 한 사회의 시민으로서의 공적 역할을 모색하게 하는 계기가 될 것이다.
