Objectives The importance of patients' sovereignty and rights has recently been emphasized. Under these circumstances, finding out what problem and constraint perceptions of patient organizations have about issues they encounter could help develop patient-centered communication and policy. Methods Among press releases distributed by the Korea Alliance of Patient Organizations over the past 12 years since its foundation, 214 press releases were selected in the form of expressing their opinions. Thematic analysis, one of the qualitative research methods, was conducted to derive problem recognition and constraint recognition in the text. Results Five topics and 14 sub-topics were extracted in relation to problem recognition. Three topics and six sub-topics were identified regarding constraint recognition. Conclusions Contrary to the idea that patient groups would be combative and one-sided, their press releases included receptive and alternative communication strategies. In addition, they tried to legislate and institutionalize related issues, not temporary solutions to perceived problems. They showed characteristics of actively striving to solve problems despite recognition of various constraints that could dampen behavior. These results are expected to contribute to reducing misunderstanding and improving understanding of patients and patient groups.

연구목적 환자의 주권과 권리의 중요성이 강조되고 있는 상황에서 환자단체가 그들이 대면하고 있는 의료 현실에 대하여 어떤 문제인식과 제약인식을 가지고 있는 지를 알아보는 것은 환자 중심의 커뮤니케이션 활성화와 관련 정책 개발에 도움을 줄 수 있을 것이다. 연구방법 창립 이후 지난 12년 동안 환자단체연합회가 배포한 보도자료 중 ‘입장 표명형 보도자료’ 214건을 대상으로 하였으며, 공중상황이론을 근거로 질적연구방법 중 하나인 주제 분석(Thematic Analysis)을 진행하였다. 연구결과 연구 결과 문제인식과 관련해 5개의 주제와 14개의 하부주제를, 제약인식과 관련해서는 3개의 주제와 6개의 하부주제를 분류해 낼 수 있었다. 결론 및 함의 환자단체가 투쟁적이고 일방적일 것이라는 생각과는 달리 보도자료에는 수용적, 대안적 커뮤니케이션 전략을 포함하고 있었다. 그들은 인식하고 있는 문제의 일시적 해결이 아닌, 법적 제도화를 추구했으며, 행동을 위축 시킬 수 있는 다양한 제약 인식에도 불구하고 적극적으로 문제 해결을 위해 노력하는 특징을 보였다. 이 같은 결과는 환자단체에 대한 오해를 줄이고, 이해를 증진시키는 데 기여할 것으로 기대한다.
