The objective of this study is to verify the possibility of utilizing the expanded concept and formative characteristics of jewelry decoration for creative fashion design through the cases of utilizing jewelry as a decorative element of clothing rather than the universal concept regarding it as a type of accessory. As for the research methodologies, first, the concept and types of jewelry were theoretically considered. In addition, to analyze the types and characteristics of jewelry decoration in contemporary fashion design, this study extracted the images of women’s clothing using jewelry made of various materials such as jewel, metal, bead, and chain as main decorative elements in S/S and F/W collections of New York, London, Paris, and Milan from 2020 to 2021. This study analyzed and examined the characteristics of total 149 collection images according to their formative elements. The research findings showed that, first, the characteristics of jewelry that could be expressed as a decorative meaning in contemporary fashion design included the repeatability, symbolism, spatiality, and fluid variability. Second, this study verified that the jewelry decoration which was used as a type of accessory could be expansively utilized in contemporary fashion design. This study is significant in that it provided the data helpful for designers to develop such creative designs using jewelry decorations. Moreover, it could be also helpful for developing fashion design suitable for consumers’ needs of individuality expression by verifying the possibility of various jewelry designs applicable to clothing.

본 연구는 주얼리를 액세서리의 한 종류로 인식한 보편적인 개념이 아닌 의복의 장식 요소로 활용된 사례를 통해 확장된 주얼리 장식의 개념과 조형적 특성을 활용하여 창의적인 패션디자인에 활용할 수 있는 가능성을 확인하는 데 목적이 있다. 연구 방법은 먼저 주얼리의 개념과 유형에 대해 이론적으로 고찰하였다. 또한 현대 패션디자인에서 주얼리 장식의 유형과 특성을 분석하기 위해 2020년부터 2021년까지 뉴욕, 런던, 파리, 밀라노의 S/S, F/W 컬렉션에서 보석, 금속, 비즈, 체인 등 다양한 소재의 주얼리를 주요 장식 요소로 활용한 여성복 이미지를 추출하였다. 149점의 컬렉션 이미지를 조형적 요소에 따라 분석하고 특성을 규명하였다. 연구 결과는 첫째, 현대 패션디자인에서 장식적 의미로서 표현 가능한 주얼리 특성은 반복성, 상징성, 공간성, 유동적 가변성이 있었다. 둘째, 액세서리의 한 종류로 활용되던 주얼리 장식이 현대 패션디자인에서 활용 범위가 확대될 수 있음을 확인하였다. 본 연구는 디자이너가 주얼리 장식을 활용한 창의적인 디자인을 개발 하는데 도움이 되는 자료로서의 의의를 가지며, 나아가 의복에 적용할 수 있는 다양한 주얼리 장식에 대한 가능성을 확인함으로써 개성 표현에 대한 소비자의 니즈에 적합한 패션디자인을 개발하는 데 도움을 줄 수 있다.
