Oju Yi Gyu-gyeong is a Silhak scholar from the late Joseon period who published the 60-volume Oju Yunmun Jangjeon Sango. Living in the country, he grew peanuts and expressed interest in the usefulness of hardy crops and minerals like gold, silver, and, bronze. This reveals how Yi Gyu-gyeong, as a Silhak scholar with continuing interest in the fixed livelihood of the people, was never isolated within the space where he resided. At the same time, his pen name of ‘Oju(five continents)’ signified how his spirit was open to the outside world. In two different ways, Yi Gyu-gyeong described in detail how the ships of the Netherlands, England, and France went adrift or came to an anchor on the Joseon coastline. The first was when he described the beauty of exchanging cultures with far-away countries that use different letters while introducing the alphabet. Another way he described these incidents was as a warning, saying the appearance of foreign ships was unusual and that precautions must be taken. Yi Gyu-gyeong was wary of foreign influence and desired a powerful response from the royal court. At the same time, he believed it was possible to engage in peaceful commerce. His interest in ships would have originated from his hope of obtaining wealth by going out into the world through the oceans and engaging in trade. However, he seemed to have been somewhat relaxed with regard to the possibility of foreign powers putting pressure on Koreans by coming to Korea through those very same oceans.

오주 이규경은 총 60여권에 달하는 『오주연문장전산고』를 남긴 조선후기 실학자다. 그는 향촌에 살면서 땅콩을 키우기도 하고 구황작물이나, 금・은・ 동 등 광물의 유용함에 관심을 보였다. 이는 이규경이 자신이 살고 있는 공간 에서 유리되지 않고, 백성의 항산( )에 늘 관심을 두었던 실학자였음을 알 게 한다. 동시에 ‘오주 , 다섯 대륙 ’라는 호는 그의 정신이 외부를 향해 열려 있음을 의미하기도 한다. 이규경은 두 가지 측면에서 네델란드, 영국, 프랑스의 배가 조선 해안에 표 류하고 정박한 일들을 상세히 서술하였다. 하나는 알파벳을 소개하면서 구만 리( )나 멀리 떨어져 있는 나라가 글자도 다르면서 교류하는 것이 아름 답다고 한 면이다. 다른 측면은 외국 선박의 출현이 심상치 않으니 정말 주의 해야 한다는 경고를 하였다는 점이다. 이규경은 외세를 경계하고 조정( ) 의 강력한 대응을 원하면서도 동시에 평화로운 통상도 가능할 것이라고 생각 한 듯하다. 배에 대한 관심은 바다를 이용해 세계로 나가서 무역을 하여 재화를 얻을 수 있다는 희망이 있기 때문일 것이다.
