Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) refers to educational activities that enable people to address current and future global challenges and realize a more sustainable and resilient society. In other words, it is the ability to understand the various issues facing people in the world today, such as the environment, development, poverty, peace, and human rights, from an interdisciplinary perspective and through systematic thinking, to derive solutions to these issues, and to act for the transformation of oneself and society. For this purpose, ESD aims to nurture transversal competencies. This paper discusses the current status and issues of ESD in Japan, examines how ESD should be introduced in school education, and then discusses the results of a questionnaire survey conducted in Yokohama City, which is actively promoting ESD. The survey reveals that the positive impact of ESD can be seen in the attitudes and behaviors of students. In addition, it was also apparent that the schools are focusing on things that are easy for students to understand and work on in their daily context when promoting ESD practices. We commend these schools for their efforts to focus on helping students understand familiar issues and acquire the general skills needed to deal with more complex problems, in accordance with their developmental stage. On the other hand, the survey also shows that it is important to actively create opportunities for cross-disciplinary and cross-curricular learning, and to encourage students to see global agendas that are distant from their daily context.

지속가능한 개발을 위한 교육(Education for Sustainable Development, ESD)은 사람들 이 현재와 미래의 글로벌 과제를 해결하고, 보다 지속 가능하고 탄력적인 사회를 실현 할 수 있도록 하는 교육 활동을 말한다. 즉 환경, 개발, 빈곤, 평화, 인권 등 오늘날 세계 인들이 직면하고 있는 다양한 문제들을 학제적 관점과 체계적 사고를 통해 이해하고, 이러한 문제들에 대한 해결책을 도출해 자신과 사회의 변혁을 위해 행동하는 능력이다. 이를 위해 ESD는 횡단적 역량을 육성하는 것을 목표로 한다. 본 논문에서는 일본의 ESD의 현황과 문제점을 논의하고, 학교 교육에 ESD가 어떻게 도입되어야 하는지를 살펴본 후, ESD를 적극적으로 추진하고 있는 요코하마시에서 실 시한 설문조사 결과를 검토한다. 설문조사는 ESD의 긍정적인 영향을 학생들의 태도와 행동에서 확인할 수 있음을 보 여준다. 또한 학교들은 ESD 실천을 추진할 때 학생들이 일상적인 맥락에서 이해하고 작업하기 쉬운 것들에 초점을 맞추고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 우리는 발전 단계에 따라 학생들이 익숙한 문제를 이해하고 더 복잡한 문제를 다루는 데 필요한 일반적인 기술을 습득하도록 돕는 데 초점을 맞춘 이러한 학교들의 노력에 대해 칭찬한다. 반면 학제간, 교과간 학습의 기회를 적극적으로 창출하고, 학생들이 일상적 맥락과 동떨어진 글로벌 의제를 볼 수 있도록 유도하는 것도 중요한 것으로 조사됐다.
