As an academic term, Pyeonssaum(team-fight) refers to Daedongnori in which the regional relation-based community is divided into two sides and competed against each other. As Daedongnori was classified into competition-oriented type and ritual-oriented type through inductive research, Pyeonssaum corresponds to Daedongnori in the competition-oriented type. These include Palanquin-fight, Torch-fight, Freehand-fight, Wagon-fight, Stoning-of-war and Tug-of-war. The term ‘Pyeonssaum’ is not a name given by the researcher arbitrarily. It is an extensional use of the name that the people call a certain single event. Previous studies have considered Pyeonssaum as a temporary synonym for stoning-of-war and have only revealed the continuity of stoning-of-war and Pyeonssaum. However, an examination of the records of Pyeonssaum reveals that stoning-of-war and Pyeonssaum are separate activities. Based on these facts, stoning-of-war was inherited as Survivals, it can be found that there was a process of its transference to Pyeonssaum. This study attempts to explain the fact through the theory of Richard Schechner, who revealed the theatricality of rituals from an anthropological perspective. It will help to identify the early model of Pyeonssaum.

학술적 용어로서 편싸움은 지연공동체가 양편으로 나뉘어 서로 겨 루는 대동놀이를 지칭한다. 대동놀이는 귀납적 연구를 통해 경합지향형 과 의례지향형으로 분류되었으므로, 편싸움이 곧 경합지향형 대동놀이에 해당하는 것이다. 가마싸움, 횃불싸움, 박시싸움, 동채싸움, 석전, 삭전 등이 여기에 해당한다. 이러한 편싸움이라는 용어는 연구자가 작위적으 로 부여한 명칭이 아니다. 민중이 어떤 단일종목을 부르던 명칭을 확장 적으로 활용한 것이다. 이전까지의 연구에서는 편싸움을 석전의 한시적 인 이명으로 생각하고 석전과 편싸움의 연속성만을 밝혀왔다. 그러나 편 싸움에 대한 기록을 살펴보면 석전과 편싸움이 구분된 활동임이 드러난 다. 이와 같은 사실에 근거하면, 석전이 잔존물로 전승되면서 편싸움으 로 전이되는 과정이 있었다는 사실을 발견할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는, 제의의 연극성을 인류학적 시선으로 밝힌 셰크너Richard Schechner의 이론을 통해, 그 사실을 설명하고자 한다. 이는 곧 편싸움의 초기모형을 규명하려는 시도이다.
