The modern church shows two extremes in evangelism and social action. The first extreme is that the church emphasizes the salvation of souls through evangelism, but excludes social responsibility. Another extreme is that the church focuses on social action without excluding the saving souls through evangelism. Thus, this article studies D. James Kennedy’s social actions and evangelism so that the church can overcome these dilemma to establish both as the two pillars of the church. Kennedy’s Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church served the Great Commission and the Cultural Mandate with two wings. He did evangelism work to fulfill the Great Commission, and pursued social actions to fulfill the cultural mandate. Kennedy understood evangelism and social responsibility as a partner, and always emphasized the priority of evangelism in relation to social action. Kennedy’s evangelism, thus, pursued the spread of the gospel through Evangelism Explosion and media broadcasting in order to fulfill the Great Commission. And he pursued direct and active social actions that sought to reclaim the politically, socially, culturally, and ethically corrupted American society in accordance with the cultural mandate. He founded the Center for Reclaiming America to educate Christians to make their communities holy. He also set up the Center for Christian Statesmanship in order to allow Christian politicians to build a holy society directly in America through evangelizing lawmakers and educating them on a Christian worldview. Kennedy pursued active social actions because simple evangelism was not enough to achieve the goal of reclaiming America from fallen America society. However, social actions in which the church directly participates in state politics could hinder evangelism because there is a risk of losing the church’s holiness and credibility. Therefore, the church must balance evangelism and social responsibility, but never forget that evangelism for the salvation of souls is the primary mission of the church.

현대 교회는 전도와 사회적 행동에 양극단을 보여준다. 첫번째 극단 은 교회가 전도를 통한 영혼 구원을 강조하지만 사회적 책임은 배제하 는 것이다. 또 다른 극단은 교회가 전도를 통한 영혼 구원은 배제한채, 사회 참여만 강조하는 것이다. 따라서 본 논문은 교회가 전도와 사회적 행동에 대한 딜레마를 극복하여 교회의 양 기둥으로 세울 수 있도록, D. James Kennedy의 사회적 행동과 전도를 연구했다. 케네디의 Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church는 지상대위임령과 문화명령을 양 날개로 사역했다. 그는 지상대위임령을 이루기 위해 전도 사역을 했고, 문화 명령을 이루기 위해 사회적 행동을 추구했다. 케네디는 전도와 사회적 책임을 파트너로서 이해했으며, 언제나 사회적 행동보다 복음 전도의 우선성을 강조했다. 케네디의 전도는 지상대위임령을 이루기 위해 전도폭발과 미디어 방 송을 통한 복음 전파를 추구했다. 그리고 그는 문화 명령을 따라 정치 적, 사회적, 문화적, 윤리적으로 타락한 미국 사회의 회복을 추구하는 직접적이고 적극적인 사회적 행동들을 추구했다. 케네디는 the Center for Reclaiming America를 설립하여, 기독교인들이 그들이 사는 지역 이 거룩해지도록 교육하였다. 또한 그는 the Center for Christian Statesmanship을 미국 국회의사당 옆에 설치하여, 의원들을 전도하고 그들에게 기독교 세계관을 교육하여, 기독 정치인들이 미국 사회를 직 접적으로 거룩한 사회를 만들도록 했다. 케네디는 타락한 미국 사회를 기독교적으로 회복하는 목표를 이루기 위해서는 단순한 복음 전파로 충분하지 않기에 적극적인 사회적 행동들을 추구하였다. 그러나 교회가 국가 정치에 직접 참여하는 행동들은 교회의 거룩성과 신뢰성을 잃 게 할 우려가 있기에 전도에도 방해가 될 수 있다. 따라서 교회는 전도 와 사회적 책임에 균형을 갖되, 영혼 구원을 위한 전도가 교회의 우선적 사명임을 잊지 않아야 한다.
