This thesis examines the rhythm rule of meddle Korean. And contrast the reasons for the extinction of the tones with the dialects of tones, and further, find substantive evidence for the extinction of tones. Although it is different from the meddle Korean, it is important that the special rhythm rules in the tone dialect are distributed in the border area with the length dialect. The western dialect of Gyeongbuk will have a weaker vitality than the eastern dialect of Gyeongbuk, and the language of Gangneung, Pyeongchang, and Jeongseon will be more confused because of the rhythm rules. These rhythm patterns may be consistent with those of medieval Korean. Therefore, rhythm patterns in modern tone dialects will greatly contribute to understanding the cause of tone confusion in middle Korean.

이 글은 중세 국어의 율동 규칙을 고찰함으로써 성조 소멸에 이르게 된 원인을 성 조 방언과 대비하고 나아가 성조 소멸에 대한 실체적 증거를 찾아보려는 데 목적을 둔다. 중세 국어와 성격은 다르지만 성조 방언에서의 특별한 율동 양상이 음장 방언 과의 접경 지역에 분포해 있다는 것이 중요하다. 경북 동부 방언보다는 경북 서부 방 언이 생명력이 약할 것이고 강릉, 평창, 정선 지역의 말은 율동에 의해 성조 혼란이 더욱 가중될 것으로 보인다. 이러한 율동 양상은 중세 국어의 율동 양상과 맞물릴 수 도 있기에 현대 성조 방언에서의 율동 양상은 중세 국어의 성조 소멸 원인을 파악하 는 데 크게 기여할 것이다. 특별한 율동이 어간의 성조까지도 변화를 시킬 수 있는 단 계가 바로 경상도 서부 방언권과 영동 방언권에서 확인된다.
