Donggyeongdaejeon has been published a total of six editions earlier than the new metal movable type printing book of 1907. In the meantime, the researchers of Donghak Peasant Revolution recognized that all six editions of the 1880s were woodblock printings without any disagreement. They have been conducting research for a long time under the premise of woodblock printing. For this reason, the 1907 edition was naturally named ‘the first movable type printing book’. Recently, a new opinion emerged that the editions published in the 1880s were wooden movable type printing books, and the need for a bibliographical study of Donggyeongdaejeon emerged in the study of Donghak Peasant Revolution. Therefore, in this paper, the analysis and characteristics of the edition of Donggyeongdaejeon published in the 1880s were examined. In addition, by analyzing the records describing the publication process of Donggyeongdaejeon, it was attempted to confirm the scope of use of terms.

｢동경대전｣은 1907년 신연활자본(新鉛活字本)보다 이른 시기에 간행된 판본으로 모두 6종이 공개되어 있다. 그동안 동학 연구자들은 다른 이견 없이 1907년 신연활자본 이전의 1880년대본 6종 모두 목판본이라고 인식하였고, 목판본이라는 전제하에 오랫동안 연구를 진행해 왔다. 때문에 자연스럽게 1907년본을 ‘최초의 활자본’이라고 명명하였다. 최근 1880년대에 간행된 판본들이 목활자본이라는 새로운 견해가 나옴으로 인해 동학 연구에 있어 ｢동경대전｣의 서지학적․판본학적 연구의 필요성이 대두되었고, 명확한 근거 제시와 과학적 분석을 토대로 판본 연구가 속히 이루어져야 한다고 보았다. 따라서 본고에서는 1880년대 간행된 ｢동경대전｣ 판본의 분석과 특징을 살펴보았고, ｢동경대전｣ 간행과정을 기술한 문헌기록과 간행 용어를 분석하여 용어들의 사용 범위와 사례를 확인하고자 하였다.
