The article analyzed the case of the third grade of Seoul S Elementary School, where musical education was conducted, and revealed the following points. First, in terms of educational purposes and content, the focus was on presenting performances in 2018, but in the 2019 course-oriented musical education, we studied stories, songs, script writing, choreography faithfully and avoided repetitive practice. In particular, before the 10th lesson, learners explored the story more deeply by subdividing it into ‘making a story’, ‘searching a person in a story’, ‘sound that they find in a story’ and ‘make a person in a story.’ Second, in 2019, the musical education centered on processes was carried out more faithfully using a textbook called ‘Musical Workbook’. Third, the musical instructors taught keeping in mind that course-oriented classes enhance learners’ potential, even though they know that learners and homeroom teachers want a highly complete performance, that they find it difficult to learn because of the large number of learners, and that they find course-oriented classes not easy to do. The homeroom teachers knew that both courses and results in musical education were important and valuable, and recognized that it should be a musical education to catch the two rabbits. It is also difficult for learners to write scripts and make great efforts to get on stage, but they learned a lot in the process of preparing them, and they wanted to perform on a larger stage in the future. This research has shown that a process-oriented musical education is not an antithesis of a performance-oriented musical education. And a musical-education goal to embrace process and performance together should be achieved simultaneoulsy. But this is not happening because the budget and conditions needed to normalize musical education are not enough. Due to the lack of budget for musical education, Seoul S Elementary School had a performance-oriented education in 2018, while a process-oriented education took place in 2019. Now that this research has revealed, we hope that in 2020, elementary musical education will be realized, not process-oriented or performance-oriented musical education, but that our learners will be able to receive a high-quality musical education on and below the stage.

이 연구의 목적은 초등 3학년 뮤지컬 교육의 내용을 고찰하는 데 있다. 연구 대상은 코로나19 이전에 오프 라인으로 진행된 뮤지컬 수업으로, 2018년과 2019년 뮤지컬 교육을 실시한 서울S초등학교의 뮤지컬 교육의 내용을 분석하였다. 그 결과 다음과 같은 사항을 파악하였다. 첫째, 초등 3학년 뮤지컬 교육의 내용이 2018년에는 공연 발표라는 결과에 초점을 두었지만, 2019년에는 결과보다는 과정에 초점을 두었다. 즉, 공연을 강조할 때에는 이야기와 노래, 대본 쓰기, 안무를 충실하게 공부하였고, 과정을 강조할 때와 같은 반복 연습은 지양하였다. 둘째, 과정을 강조할 때에는 공연을 강조할 때 사용하지 않았던 ‘북뮤지컬 워크북’이란 교재를 활용하여 과정 중심 뮤지컬 교육을 더 충실하게 진행하였다. 셋째, 뮤지컬 강사들은 ‘과정 중심이어도 학습자들과 담임교사가 완성도 높은 공연을 원한다는 점’과 ‘학습자 수가 많아서 힘들 다는 점’ 그리고 ‘과정 중심의 수업을 쉽지 않게 여겼다는 점’을 알면서도 ‘과정 중심 수업이 학습자의 잠 재력을 증진한다는 점’을 인식하고 지향했다. 담임교사들은 뮤지컬 교육에서 과정과 결과 모두 중요하고 가치 있다는 것을 알고, 이 두 마리의 토끼를 잡을 수 있는 뮤지컬 교육이 되어야 한다고 인식하고 있었다. 또한 학습자들은 대본 쓰기가 힘들고, 무대에 서기 위해 큰 노력을 해야 하지만, 이를 준비하는 과정에서 많이 배웠고, 앞으로는 더 큰 무대에서 완성도 높은 공연을 하고 싶어했다. 이를 통해 과정 중심의 뮤지컬 교육은 공연 중심의 뮤지컬 교육과 상반된 의미라기보다 이 두 가지는 함께 성취해야 할 초등 뮤지컬 교육의 목표라는 것을 밝혔다. 그런데 이것이 널리 실현되지 않고 있는 것은 뮤지컬 교육을 정상화하기 위해 필요한 예산과 여건이 충분하지 않기 때문이다. 앞으로는 과정과 공연에 모두 충실한 초등 뮤지컬 교육이 실현되어 학습자들이 무대 위와 아래에서 깊이 있는 뮤지컬 교육을 받을 수 있게 되길 기대한다.
