This article aims to study the life and spirituality of OBang Rev. Choi Heung Jong. He was a pastor, social activist, and independent activist during the most turbulent periods of Korea’s modern history. He practiced Christian value throughout his life and greatly influenced the modern history of Gwangju through his devotion to aiding the poor, the anti-colonial independence movement, the education of the people, and missionary work. As the first elder in Gwangju’s Protestant community, he lived his whole life as a neighbor to the downtrodden classes. At the end of his life, he wishes to transcend the limitations of the body and the rejection of all forms of greed. In an extraordinary gesture, he composed his own death certificate to mark his break from all worldly activities, gave himself a new name, Obang. This means the renunciation of five types of greed including the desire for fame and for material wealth, sexual desire and desire for food, and religious self-righteousness. OBang Rev. Choi Heung Jong withdrew into the forested wilderness of the Mudeng Mountain on the outskirts of Gwangju. Until his last breath, he chose a life among the marginalized embracing and sheltering lepers and beggars as his family. Living among the marginalized, he embodied the Gospel, the Christian Faith and what it means to follow Jesus. In this study, I identify four major types of Christian spirituality according to Philip Sheldrake. The four types of spirituality are the ascetical-monastic type, the mystical type, the active-practical type and the prophetic-critical type. Then I applied the life and spirituality of OBang Rev. Choi Heung Jong to four major types of Christian spirituality. As the result, I discovered that life and spirituality of OBang Rev. Choi Heung Jong was a wholistic model. His spirituality was found the balance between vertical and horizontal aspect. Especially, the active-practical type was prominently featured in his life because his priority became the hands and feet of the Lord in the world. When Korean Church and Christian has been disoriented after Covid-19, I convince that his life and spirituality will be a wonderful model for people to emulate

본 논문은 오방 최흥종 목사의 생애와 영성을 연구하고자 하는데 그 목적이 있다. 그는 격동의 한국 근대 역사 속에서 목회자, 사회활동가와 독립운동가로 살았던 인물 이다. 오방은 가난한 이들을 돕는 일에 헌신하고, 반-식민주의 독립운동에 참가하였 고, 민중들을 교육하고, 선교사역을 감당함으로 기독교 가치를 그의 삶을 통해 실행하 였고, 광주 근대 역사에 크게 영향을 미쳤다. 오방은 광주 개신교회의 첫 장로가 되 어, 억압받는 이들의 이웃이 되어 평생을 살았다. 인생의 말년에, 그는 육체의 한계와 모든 형태의 탐욕을 부정하고 이를 넘어서기를 원했다. 이러한 특별한 몸짓으로, 그는 모든 세상의 활동으로부터 단절시키는 표시로써, 그 자신의 사망 선언문을 작성하였 고, ‘오방’이라는 새로운 이름을 얻었다. 이는 다섯 가지 종류의 탐욕을 부정한다는 의 미인데, 명예와 물질적 부에 대한 욕망, 음식과 성적 욕망 그리고 종교적 자기 의에 대한 욕망을 포함한다. 이후 그는 광주 외곽 무등산 자락 숲으로 뒤덮인 황무지로 물 러났다. 숨질 때까지, 그는 한센인들과 걸인들을 가족으로 받아들이고, 거처를 제공하 면서 소외된 이들과의 삶을 선택했다. 소외된 이들 가운데 살면서, 그는 기독교 신앙 과 무엇이 예수님을 따르는 삶인지 복음을 구현하였다. 필립 쉘드레이크의 견해를 따라, 본 연구에서 연구자는 기독교 영성의 4가지 중요 한 유형을 규명하고자 하였다. 즉, 수덕적-수도원적 유형, 신비적 유형, 능동적-실천적 유형, 그리고 예언적-비평적 유형이다. 이어서 연구자는 오방 최흥종 목사의 생애와 영성을 기독교 영성의 4가지 유형에 적용해 보았다. 그 결과, 연구자는 오방 최흥종 목사의 영성은 통전적 모델이라는 점과 그의 영성이 수직적이며 수평적인 측면의 균 형을 이루고 있음을 발견하게 되었다. 특별히, 능동적-실천적 유형은 그의 생애에서 두드러진 특징인데, 그 이유는 그의 우선 순위가 세상에서 주님의 손과 발이 되는 것 이기 때문이다. 코로나 이후 한국교회와 성도들이 방향성을 상실한 상황에서, 오방 최 흥종 목사의 삶과 영성은 사람들이 본받는 좋은 롤모델이 되리라고 확신하는 바이다.
