This paper starts from a problematic awareness that raises the need for a TV drama writer theory focusing on “Yes, That’s the way it goes”, Kim Suhyun’s likely final family drama while showing the typical characteristics. In particular, this paper analyzes the symbolic character of the elderly first generation, paying attention to the fact that Kim Suhyun, who has been evaluated as a writer with outstanding zeitgeist, has been repeating the same setting of a large family for over 20 years. To this end, we explore the character reproduction method targeting the video and text of the 54th full episode and apply the discourse of old age in the ethics of ‘self-care’ presented by Foucault. It was consequently found that the 1st elderly character is not a character that reproduces the writer’s family romance, nor a character who represents the patriarchal order, but an ideal old-age character who completes his life as an independent subject. As physically, mentally, and economically independent subjects, they are living an active and independent life through a practice of self-management, a life philosophy of gratitude, and an independent family economy concept. In addition, they play the role of teachers in the family network, who awaken the model and wisdom of ‘letting go’ and ‘protecting’. ‘Letting go’ is the power of domination in a relationship, and ‘protecting’ is a value that needs to be maintained and strengthened. In particular, the first death of the male character in the work conveys the depth of the artist’s consciousness about aging and death, along with the narration. Also the basis of a completed life of 1st generation, which is self-deprecating as ‘satisfaction’, ‘happiness’ and ‘success’, is a family and a family love, and the value of family is the result of Kim Suhyun’s consistent artist consciousness, not repetition of self-replication.

본고는 김수현 가족 드라마의 전형성을 보이는 동시에 가족 드라마 완결작이라고 할 수 있는 「그래, 그런 거야」를 중심으로 TV 드라마 작가론의 필요성을 제기하는 문제의식에서 출발한다. 특히 시대적 감수성이 뛰어난 작가로 공히 평가받아 온 김수현 작가가 가족드라마 장르에서 대가족 설정을 20년 넘게 반복하고 있는 점에 주목해 그 상징적 캐릭터인 1대 고령자 캐릭터를 분석한다. 이를 위해 「그래, 그런 거야」 54회 전 회차 영상과 텍스트를 대상으로 캐릭터 재현방식을 탐구하고 그 분석 방법의 틀로 푸코가 제시한 ‘자기배려’ 윤리학의 노년 담론을 적용한다. 연구 결과 김수현 작가 가족 드라마 속 1대 고령자 캐릭터는 작가의 가족 로망스를 재현하는 캐릭터도 아니고, 가부장 질서를 대변하는 인물도 아닌 독립된 주체로서 삶을 완결해가는 이상적 노년의 캐릭터임을 알 수 있었다. 이들은 신체적·정신적·경제적 독립 주체로서 자기관리라는 자기 실천, 감사의 생활철학, 독립된 가족경제 관념을 통해 능동적이고 주체적인 노년의 삶을 살고 있다. 또한 이들은 대가족 내 스승 역할을 수행하며 ‘내려놓기’와 ‘지키기’라는 가족 관계망 속 본보기와 지혜를 일깨우는 인물로 재현되어, ‘내려놓기’는 관계 속 지배의 권력을, ‘지키기’는 관계 속 유지와 강화해야 할 가치이다. 특히 「그래, 그런 거야」 속 1대 남성 캐릭터의 죽음은 작품 전반에 사용된 내레이션의 자기성찰과 더불어 늙음과 죽음에 관한 작가의식의 깊이를 전달한다. 또 ‘만족’ ‘행복’ ‘성공’으로 자평하는 1대의 완결된 삶의 근간은 가족과 가족애이며, 가족의 가치는 자기복제의 반복이 아닌 김수현 작가의 일관된 작가의식의 결과물이다.
