This study analyzes the problems of Korea’s current multicultural society reproduced in the drama “Itaewon Class”(2020) and the characteristics of interculturality that the drama is newly pursuing, to critically analyze and evaluate the layered aspects of the changes, explorations, and limitations in Korean multicultural society. First, “Itaewon Class” reproduces the problems of Korean multicultural society, showing the limitations of multicultural policies centered on blood ties and families, and also deals with the problems of various minorities that cultures of multiplicity can include. Second, various characters in the drama who are related to multiple cultures understand differences, communicate with each other, and work together toward a common goal. This shows a new culture, by moving away from a violent culture centered on money, power, and profit, toward a decentralized intercultural value. Third, the search for mutual growth through communication and solidarity, which is the main narrative of this drama, is noteworthy in that it brings not only individual growth but also community growth. The Danbam family, a group of marginalized members of society, continues to fight against the blood-related family-centered Jang family. It starts as a family-like form at first, but grows in solidarity with neighboring stores on Gyeongnidan Street, promotes coexistence with franchisees by branding Danbam, and communicates with the world beyond the domestic market through corporate IC based on people and trust. Although “Itaewon Class” simplifies conflict with the composition of good and evil between Danbam and the Jang family, and reveals the limits of the growth and happiness of female characters ending in love and family, it has important significance in that it provides meaningful insight into the new direction that needs to be taken interculturally, along with the problems of the Korean multicultural society.

본 연구는 드라마 ｢이태원 클라쓰｣(2020)가 재현하고 있는 한국 다문화 사회의 문제점과 드라마가 새롭게 추구하고 있는 상호문화성의 특징을 함께 고찰하고, 한국 다문화 사회의 변화와 모색, 한계의 중층적인 양상을 비판적으로 분석하고 평가하고자 하였다. 첫째, ｢이태원 클라쓰｣는 한국 다문화 사회의 문제를 재현하면서 한국 내 인종차별 문제, 혈연과 가족 중심 다문화 정책의 한계를 보여주는 한편 다문화에 포함할 수 있는 다양한 소수자들의 문제까지 다루고 있다. 둘째, 이 드라마 속 다문화의 다양한 속성을 가진 여러 구성원들이 차이를 이해하고 소통하며 공동의 목표를 향해 함께 나아감으로써 돈과 권력, 이익에 중심을 둔 폭력적 문화에서 벗어나 탈중심의 상호문화적 가치를 지향하며 새로운 문화를 보여주고 있다. 셋째, 이 드라마의 주요 서사인 소통과 연대를 통한 동반 성장 모색은 개인 차원의 성장뿐 아니라 공동체의 성장을 가져온다는 점에서 주목된다. 사회에서 소외된 구성원들이 모인 단밤 식구(食口)는 혈연관계의 가족 중심 장가(長家)에 계속 맞서면서 처음에는 유사 가족 형태로 출발하지만 경리단 거리의 이웃 가게들과 연대하며 성장해 나가고, 단밤을 브랜드화해서 가맹점들과 상생을 도모하고, 사람과 신뢰가 바탕이 되는 기업 IC를 통해 국내를 넘어 세계와 소통해 나간다. ｢이태원 클라쓰｣는 단밤과 장가의 선악 구도로 갈등이 단순화되고 여성 인물들의 성장과 행복이 사랑이나 가족으로 귀결되는 한계를 드러내기도 했지만, 인종 중심의 다문화성을 벗어나 다양한 탈중심 문화의 소통을 담고 있고 한국 다문화 사회의 문제점과 함께 상호문화적으로 나아가야 할 새로운 방향을 의미 있게 통찰하고 있다는 점에서 중요한 의의를 갖는다.
