After fifty years of his literary career, Lee O-young (1934-2022) remained two posthumous notes since he published his first collection of poems. With reference to Theodor Adorno and Edward Said’s discussions of lateness, this paper considers the meanings of versification, which Lee O-young opted as his late style. Like so many great artists who resisted the social order and times by their catastrophic styles which created a stir in the mature stages of their respective lifelong works, Lee O-young also opted to resist and newly challenge his existing veteran writing. Going beyond his existing intellectual, analytic, logical and diagnostic writing, Lee O-young prays and confesses, just as one does the sacrament of confession, revealing and unfolding his injuries, invoking his senses and memories. His poems weave freely through prose, essays, children’s verse (fairy tales), prayer, records, and scribbles. By his making a poetic strategy with allegory, aphorism, sensory metaphor, and visible formality, his poems are characterized as the style of prayer of the christian faith, the style of memory toward the vitalities of maternity and childish mind, the style of reflection on death, and the style of scribbles in his own handwriting. “Lee O-young as a poet” is a new self of the later part of his life. His versification is not only the expression of his will to decisively style the splits and irreconcilable elements between life and death that he faced late in life, but also an existential exile, as well as a last resistive and challengeable journey of a great artist who is surrounded by death. In its birthplace for reacting against his existing writing, his versification reveals not only “negativity” in its contradictory and alienated relations, but also “resistivity” in its opposition to the temporal stream. This versification therefore answers to the late style in the respective mature stages of great artists.

이어령(1934~2022)은 문단 생활 50년 만에 첫 시집을 발행한 이후 2권의 유고 시(노트)집을 남겼다. 본고는 테오도르 아도르노와 에드워드 사이드의 말년성 논의를 참조하여 이어령이 말년의 양식으로 선택한 시쓰기의 의미를 고찰한다. 위대한 예술가들이 평생을 거쳐 쌓아 올린 완숙의 경지에 파문을 일으키는 파국의 양식으로 사회적 질서와 시간에 저항했듯이, 이어령도 능숙한 기존의 글쓰기를 거부하는 새로운 저항과 도전을 선택했다. 지성과 분석과 논리와 진단의 글쓰기에서 벗어나 고해성사하듯 기도하고 고백하고, 상처를 드러내 펼쳐놓고, 감각과 기억을 소환한다. 그의 시편들은 산문과 시, 에세이와 시, 동시(동화)와 시, 기도와 시, 기록과 시, 낙서와 시 사이를 넘나든다. 또한 알레고리, 아포리즘, 감각적 은유, 시각적 형태성을 시적 전략으로 삼아 기독교 신앙에 의지한 기도의 양식, 모성과 동심의 생명을 지향하는 기억의 양식, 죽음에 대한 성찰의 양식, 육필로 새긴 낙서의 양식으로 특화된다. 그에게 시쓰기는 말년에 맞닥뜨린 삶과 죽음 사이의 균열과 화해 불가능한 요소들을 기존의 글쓰기와 다른 양식으로 담아내려는 의지의 표출이며, 죽음에 둘러싸인 위대한 예술가에게 저항과 도전의 마지막 여정이자 실존적 망명에 해당한다. 기존의 논리적이고 이성적인 글쓰기에 대한 반작용의 자리에서 탄생하고 있다는 점에서 ‘저항성’과, 시인이 속한 21세기라는 시대적 흐름을 거스르는 중세적·근대적 시쓰기라는 점에서 ‘부정성’‘을 보여준다. 이러한 그의 시쓰기는 완숙의 경지에 이르렀던 위대한 예술가들이 보여준 말년의 양식에 부합한다. ‘시인 이어령’은 이어령 말년의 새로운 자아다. 그의 시에 등장하는 파편적인 기도, 기억, 성찰, 낙서의 양식은 시적 자아의 본질적 구성물이자 그 자체로 말년의 정체성이다. 말년의 예술가가 마지막으로 선택한 궁극의 양식으로서의 시쓰기는 시의 근원적 자리, 시의 위의(威儀)를 새롭게 소환한다. 시간과 생로병사라는 풀리지 않는 모순을 살아내야 하는 인간에게 그 균열을 투시하는 첨단의 언어이자, 그 모순을 대면하고 감내하고 질문하는 절정의 언어로서의 시가 21세기에도 여전히 유일하고 유효한 양식임을 보여주고 있다.
