While Gangwon region is located on the outskirts in terms of politics, society, and culture due to its rugged mountains, the region has been respected as a sacred land or served as a center of faith in terms of Buddhist history. It is said that Monk Jajang founded temples such as Woljeongsa, Sudasa, and Jeongamsa, and Zen Master Doeui spread Zen Buddhism when he came to Jinjeonsa Temple. As Zen Buddhism became popular, so-called Nine Zen Schools were formed nationwide, and two of them were built in Yeongwol and Gangneung. Powerful families, which appeared at the end of the Silla Dynasty and the beginning of the Goryeo Dynasty, grew up in possession of their own military power by creating their clan villages. In order to justify their position, they were associated with the ideology of Zen Buddhism, and Zen Buddhism formed an independent sphere of influence under the protection of these local powerful families. Gung-ye, who founded the later Goguryeo, Yang Gil, a rival in Bukwon who was comparable to Gyeonhwon, the descendants of Kim Juwon, and Wang Soonsik who was a general in Myeongju, all them were forces of powerful families in Gangwon region and they built fortresses, created religious, military, and economic facilities, etc., or had relationships with each other. In creating facilities, it is essential to use roof tiles & bricks, which are building members to cover the roofs of houses. This study intends to examine the characteristics of roof tiles & bricks of the Later Three Kingdoms by considering the size of beating plates, the modification methods of the upper and lower parts, division traces by roof tile-cutting knife, and inscriptions (names of places), etc. focusing on those roof tiles & bricks excavated from temples and clan villages of powerful families. As a result of analyzing roof tiles and tile excavated from the historic sites where powerful family and zen monks lived, the roof tiles made with middle beating plate up to 9-10th century were discovered. Through this appearance, the Gangwon region was used in a mixture of the middle and the middle of the 9th century to the 10th century, and the middle of the 10th century was developed when only the long beating plate tiles were used, such as the Anchang-ri Site, Wonju. It is understood that by the end of the 10th century, the tile production technique of the Goryeo Dynasty was completed. (976~983)’, it was found that in Three-Story Stone Pagoda of Myoeomsa Temple Site in Jinju, giwa made with middle beating plate had been used. This suggested that roof tile manufacturing method was different depending on where it was standardized or where it was perished.
