After the COVID-19 pandemic, the identity of worship and sermons as “the grace of meeting” has been shaken. Worship as a meeting is being diluted online, and the sermon as God’s voice is losing its dynamic emotion due to non-face-to-face communication. Especially with regard to preaching, the audience is losing the feeling of experiencing God through the Word. This current reality strongly demands sermons that allow the congregation to experience God. Therefore, this study intends to present ‘a sermon in which pathos is alive’ as an alternative. To this end, I first examined the etymology of ‘pathos’ in Aristotle’s Rhetoric, which provides the rhetorical foundation for ‘pathos’. And I derived the hospitable concept of ‘God-Preacher-Audience Pathos’ as a key element of ‘Preaching with Pathos’. Then, through the example of Martyn Lloyd-Jones, who emphasized and applied this ‘pathos’ as ‘the main element of preaching’, I tried to find the ‘justification of preaching with pathos’. Next, I focused on “antithesis” as a sermonistic rhetoric that effectively reinforces the “God-Preacher-Audience Pathos”. Then I revealed that contrast: the representative mode of biblical revelation is a major means of generating and conveying pathos in a powerful way. I examined how Christ, who as ‘a spokesman for the heart of God the father’, actively used contrasting methods to deliver ‘God’s pathos’. Finally, I introduce ‘a contrasting vein’ that acording to Victor Kuligin in The Language of Salvation flows throughout the Bible, in which the revelation of salvation is interpreted as a contrast method. And this is called ‘pathos’. We then focuse on how to structure in contrast and to describe in contrast. I presented ‘7 Contrasting Methods for Pathos’ that I think can be actively used in sermons.

코로나19 펜데믹 이후‘만남의 은혜’로서의 예배와 설교의 정체성이 흔들리고 있다. 만남으로서의 예배는 온라인으로 인해 그 현장성이 희 석되고, 하나님의 음성으로서의 설교는 비대면으로 인해 그 역동적인 감격과 감동을 상실해 가고 있다. 특히 설교와 관련하여, 청중이 말씀 을 통해 하나님을 경험하는 감격을 잃어가고 있다. 이러한 작금의 현실 은 하나님을 경험하게 하는 설교를 강력히 요청하고 있다. 이에 본 연 구는‘파토스가 살아있는 설교’(a sermon in which pathos is alive)를 그 대안으로 제시하고자 한다. 이를 위해 첫째, ‘파토스’의 수사학적 토대를 제공하고 있는 Aristoteles의『수사학』(Rhetoric)에 나타난‘파토스’(pathos)의 어원을 살펴‘파토스가 있는 설교’의 핵심요소로서의‘하나님-설교자-청중 의 파토스’(God-Preacher-Audience Pathos)에 대한 설교학적 개념을 도출하고, 이러한‘파토스’를‘설교 전달의 주요소’로 역설하고 적용 한 Martyn Lloyd-Jones의 예를 통해‘파토스가 있는 설교의 정당성’ 을 찾고자 했다. 둘째,‘ 하나님-설교자-청중의파토스’를효과적으로강화하는설교 학적 수사로서“대조법”(antithesis)을 주목한 본 연구는, 먼저 성경 계 시의 대표적인 표현양식으로서의 대조법이 파토스를 강렬하게 생성시 키고 전달하는 주요한 수단임을 밝힌 다음, ‘하나님 아버지의 가슴의 대변자’(a spokesman for the heart of God the father)로서의 그리스도 가 어떻게 대조법을 적극적으로 활용하여‘하나님의 파토스’를 전달하 였는지를 살폈다. 마지막으로, 구원 계시를 대조법으로 풀어낸 Victor Kuligin의『구원 의 언어』(The Language of Salvation)를 통해 성경 전체에 흐르는‘대 조의 광맥’(a contrasting vein)을 소개하고, 이를‘파토스’로 강화하기 위해 어떻게 구조화(structured in contrast)하고 묘사할(to describe in contrast) 것인가를 주목하여, 설교에 적극적으로 활용할 수 있다고 여 겨지는‘파토스를 위한 대조법 7가지’를 제시했다.
