The close relationship between religion and politics is a scandal in modern society. Not only because it brings about social conflict, but because it brings back to life the biased old-fashioned frame of distinction between orthodoxy and heresy, religion and pseudo-religion. All of them are considered relics of the past, but they are not disappearing from our reality. The question may be raised as to why such a trend does not disappear. This article examines the close relationship between religion and politics through the political characteristics of religion and the religious characteristics of politics. The reason why interpenetration characteristics appear at various levels of religion (natural, established, ideological) and in various areas of politics is that it is inevitable to justify the existence of individuals or groups, the violence to maintain the existence of such agents. And it is also because religion is the main product and tool of such justification, and the foundation of politics (the political) is constructed from the justified perception of reality. The honeymoon relationship between religion and politics does not consist solely of negative collusion. Those who believe in the legitimacy of religious (or politically biased) perception of reality tend to define the cooperation between religion and politics as right in their consciousness and practice. The honeymoon scandal of religion and politics reveals the intricate interests of various agents in society.

종교와 정치의 밀접한 관계는 근대 사회에서 하나의 스캔들이다. 사회적 갈등을 불러온다 는 점에서만이 아니라 정통과 이단, 종교와 사이비라는 과거의 편향적 구분틀을 다시 살아나게 하기 때문이다. 그 모든 것이 구시대의 유물로 여겨지지만, 우리의 현실에서 사라지지 않고 있 다. 왜 그런 경향이 사라지지 않는가 하는 의문이 제기될 수 있다. 이 글에서 종교와 정치의 밀 접한 관련성을 종교의 정치적 특성, 정치의 종교적 특성을 통해서 살펴본다. 종교의 다양한 층 위에서, 그리고 정치의 다양한 영역에서 상호 침투적 특성이 나타나는 이유는 인간 개인이나 집단의 존재 혹은 그 존재를 지속하기 위한 폭력을 정당화하는 것이 불가피한 일이기 때문이 다. 또 그 정당화의 주요한 산물이자 도구가 종교이고, 정당화된 현실 인식으로부터 정치의 토 대(정치적인 것)가 구성되기 때문이다. 종교와 정치의 밀월 관계는 부정적 결탁으로만 이루어 지는 게 아니다. 종교적(혹은 정치적으로 편향된) 현실 인식의 정당성을 믿는 사람들은 자신들 의 의식과 실천에서 양자의 결합을 올바른 것으로 규정하기 마련이다. 종교와 정치의 밀월 스 캔들은 사회 내 다양한 행위자들의 복잡한 이해관계를 드러낸다.
