There has been years of rigorous research that shows the positive outcomes of bilingual education for different age groups. However, given the fact that teacher is primary success factor for this, there is a paucity of information about what has worked in teacher training programs. In order to fill this gap, the paper reviews the bilingual teacher training programs mainly in the U.S. and some of the European countries then provides implications for Korean English education. First, the paper specifically introduces design of the programs in three areas; structural and ancillary factors, language teaching training in content based language teaching model, and bilingual paraeducator careerladder school-university partnership. Second, it delineates professional development tools including instructional conversations and mentoring the bilingual teacher. Then the competencies needed by bilingual teachers are examined. Lastly, the paper concludes with issues to be considered for Korean English education environment.

이중언어 교육의 긍정적 연구 결과는 다양한 학자들과 여러 나라에서 이미 밝혀진 바이다. 그러나 실질적으로 이러한 결과의 가장 중요한 요소 인 교사에 대한 연구나 교사교육 프로그램에 대한 연구는 상대적으로 적 다. 따라서 이 간극을 좁히고자 이번 연구에서는 이중언어교육이 활발히 일어나고 있는 미국과 유럽의 이중언어교사 교육 프로그램을 살펴보고 한 국영어교육에 유용한 시사점을 제안하고자 한다. 먼저는 이중언어 교사교 육 프로그램의 모델을 살펴볼텐데 구조적, 보조적 요인, 내용기반 언어교 육에서의 언어교사교육, 보조교육자 진로연계와 지역내 대학과의 협업 모 델을 소개한다. 다음으론 교사연수 도구 중 수업에 필요한 대화 및 이중언 어 교사 멘토링에 설명한다. 또한 이중언어교사에게 필요한 역량이 무엇 인지 살펴본 후 끝으로 이중언어 교사교육에서 얻은 내용을 바탕으로 한국 영어 교육 환경에서 고려해야 할 이슈들을 제언한다
