This paper presents an argument for the legitimate place of theology and theological education in the university context. To support this argument, paradoxically, this article demonstrates a particularity of Christian theology by speaking of the necessity of prayer which is one of the most religious activities; this is the characteristic of this article. First, to prove this argument, this article defines theology as a science. Theology is a specifically academic science with its particular subject and object. Second, this study examines prayer as a communion with God. Prayer is essential to have a relationship with God, who is not only the object of theology but the subject. In this section, this study shows how prayer contributes to theological studies. Third, this study looks into the principles of prayer, by which theological studies can be guided in the right direction. Finally, this article argues the importance of prayer for theologians. Prayer, as a means to integrate intellect and spirituality, is an inevitable practice for theologians to proceed with the work of theology. Through prayer, theologians not only achieve a clearer understanding of God’s revelation but become able to live out with the church the time of the kingdom of God, which is distinguished from the world.

본 논문은 종합대학교라는 학문적 맥락 속 기독교 신학 및 신학교육 의 당위성과 적합성을 제안하는데 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위하여 역설적 으로 가장 종교적인 행위인 기도의 필요성을 들어 신학의 특정성을 주장하는데 본 논문의 특징이 있다. 이를 위해 먼저 과학적 학문으로서 의 신학을 정의한다. 신학은 신학만의 특정한 탐구 주체와 대상을 가진 하나의 특수한 학문이다. 둘째, 하나님과의 교제로서의 기도에 대해서 살펴본다. 기도는 특수 학문으로서의 신학의 주체이자 대상인 하나님 과의 교제에 있어서 중요한 방법 중 하나다. 기도를 통해 신학적 연구 가 더욱 발전할 수 있음을 논증한다. 셋째, 기도의 원칙들을 살펴본다. 기도의 원칙들을 살펴봄으로써 올바른 방향으로의 학문적 연구인 신학 을 수행 할 수 있음을 주장한다. 그리고 마지막으로, 신학자에게 있어 기도의 중요성을 강조한다. 지성과 영성을 통합하는 통전적인 수단으 로서 기도는 신학자들에게 있어 필수적인 실천임을 증명한다. 기도를 통하여 신학자들은 신적 계시에 대한 명확한 이해를 얻을 뿐만 아니라 세상과 구별되는 하나님 나라의 시간을 교회와 함께 살아갈 수 있게 된다.
