The purpose of this study is to examine and suggest the meaning of self-help groups for marriage migrant women in a multicultural society by settlement cycle. A “self-help group” refers to a group of members with similar needs and purposes. The self-help group for marriage migrant women functions as a starting point and channel for adaptation to Korean society, and its importance is gradually increasing. In this study, the transition process of marriage migrant women’s self-help groups was largely divided into ‘migration adaptation period’, ‘internal growth period’, and ‘social role re-examination period’ according to the settlement cycle, and the meanings and cases of each were discussed. In addition, suggestions were made on self-help groups for marriage migrant women in terms of ‘subjectivity and spontaneity’, ‘expansion of participating members’, ‘diversity and complexity of participating purposes’, and ‘community participation and altruism’. The results of this study are meaningful in that they can be used as basic data to improve the overall understanding of marriage migrant women’s self-help groups and to seek the operation, promotion, and activation of self-help groups that meet the needs of marriage migrant women and social changes.

이 연구는 다문화사회에 결혼이주여성 자조모임의 정착주기별 의미를 고찰하고 주요 쟁점에 대해 제언하는 데에 목적이 있다. ‘자조모임’(Self-Help Group)은 비슷한 요구와 목적을 가진 구성원들의 모임을 의미한다. 결혼이 주여성 자조모임은 한국 사회 적응의 시작점이자 통로로서 기능을 하며 그 중요성이 점차 증대되고 있다. 이 연 구에서는 결혼이주여성 자조모임을 정착주기에 따라 크게 ‘이주 적응기’, ‘내적 성장기’, ‘사회적 역할 재조명기’ 로 범주화하고 각각의 의미와 사례를 논하였다. 또한 ‘주체성과 자발성’, ‘참여구성원의 확장성‘, ‘참여 목적의 다 양성과 복합성’, ‘지역사회 참여와 이타성’의 측면에서 결혼이주여성 자조모임에 대한 제언을 하였다. 본 연구의 결과는 결혼이주여성 자조모임에 대한 전반적인 이해도 제고와 더불어 결혼이주여성의 요구와 사회 변화에 부합 하는 자조모임의 운영, 촉진, 활성화를 모색하는 데 기초자료로 활용될 수 있다는 점에서 의의가 있다.
