This study attempts to examine the current meaning of the Donghak Peasant Revolution with a life-historical approach that pays attention to the process in which the subject (re)constructs life from his/her own point of view. More specifically, this study analyzes how citizens living in the present era, rather than state-centered or record-oriented history, perceive the Donghak Peasant Revolution and how to construct such a perception. To this end, this study examines the memories of the Donghak Peasant Revolution drawn by three ordinary people through a ‘biographical narrative interview’ and how they construct their own perception of the Donghak Peasant Revolution. According to the analysis of this study, it can be confirmed that the personal historical experiences of the Donghak Peasant Revolution appearing in the life histories of the three research subjects are different and reconstructed in their life histories as the elements of experience and generations intersect. In particular, I believe that the place called Jeongeup, where the three research subjects lived and experienced together, shared the collective meaning and symbol of the Donghak Peasant Revolution on the one hand, but on the other hand, the history experienced there reflects the presentness of the individualized method. 본 연구의 목적은 주체자가 자신의 시각에서 삶을 (재)구성해가는 과정에 주목 하는 생애사적 접근으로 동학농민혁명의 현재적 의미를 살펴본다. 보다 구체적으 로 필자는 국가 중심, 기록중심의 역사가 아닌, 현시대를 살아가는 시민들은 동학 농민혁명을 어떻게 인식하며, 이러한 인식을 어떻게 구성해 나가는지를 분석한다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 ‘생애사적 내러티브 면접(biographical narrative interview)’을 통해 세 명의 일반인들이 그려내는 동학농민혁명에 대한 기억과 이들은 자신들이 가지고 있는 동학농민혁명에 대한 인식을 어떻게 구성해나가는지를 규명한다. 본 연구의 분석에 따르면, 세 명의 연구주체들의 생애사에서 나타나는 동학농민 혁명에 대한 개인적 역사경험은 경험방식과 세대요인이 맞물리면서 그들의 생애사 에서 상이하게 나타나고, 재구성된다는 것을 확인할 수 있다. 특히 필자는 세 명의 연구주체들이 함께 살고, 체험했던 정읍이라는 장소가 한편으로는 동학농민혁명에 대한 집단적인 의미와 상징을 공유하지만, 다른 한편으로는 그곳에서 경험한 역사 는 개별화된 방식의 현재성을 보인다는 점을 알 수 있었다. 또한 동학농민혁명을 사유하고 경험하는 방식은 혁명의 자취를 담고 있는 장소에 여전히 위치하고 있는 ‘남겨진 자’를 통해서 경험되며, 이러한 간접적인 역사경험의 현재성은 역사주체들 간에 ‘분리성’과 ‘절합성’을 동시에 보여주고 있다.
