This article aims to review Park Si-hyung's history and research, which represents North Korean history, and to examine the impact of Balhae history research on North Korea's history education. Park Si-hyung, who studied positivism at Keizo Imperial University, wrote a paper criticizing the Korea land system theory of Japan, but he could not overcome the frame of colonialism itself. At a time when institutional and material conditions of history were in place in North Korea after liberation and the methodology of material history was established, Park Si-hyung went beyond colonialism and secured a theoretical position to relativize the Asiatic mode of production. At that time, North Korean history internalized the nationalistic tendency under the influence of Soviet history, which became stronger in line with the political changes in reality. According to this trend, Park Si-hyung also led the study of Balhae history and cast a model of the theory of the Northern and Southern dynasties era. His perspective on Balhae's history was also reflected in North Korea's history education. This perception of history differs a lot from the common South Korean theory, but it can be said to be consistent in that Balhae is included in the history of the nation.

이 글은 북한의 역사학을 대표하는 박시형의 이력과 연구 내용을 검토하 고, 특히 발해사 연구가 북한의 역사교육에 끼친 영향을 살펴보려는 것이다. 경성제국대학에서 실증주의 역사학을 공부한 박시형은 일제의 조선토지제 도론을 비판하는 논문을 썼지만, 식민지주의의 프레임 자체를 극복할 수는 없었다. 해방 이후 북한에서 역사학의 제도적, 물질적 조건이 구비되고 유물 사관의 방법론이 확립되던 시기에 박시형은 식민지주의를 넘어서는 한편, 맑 스주의의 아시아적 생산양식을 상대화하는 이론적 입장을 확보한다. 당시 북 한의 역사학은 소련 역사학의 영향 아래 민족주의적 성향을 내재화했는데, 현실의 정치적 변화와 맞물려 이러한 경향은 더욱 강해졌다. 박시형 역시 이 러한 흐름에 따라 발해사 연구를 시대하고 남북국시대론의 모델을 주조했다. 발해의 역사를 중시하는 그의 관점은 북한의 역사교육에도 그대로 반영되었 다. 이러한 역사 인식은 남한의 일반적 통설과 많은 차이를 보이지만, 발해를 민족의 역사에 포섭한다는 점에서는 일치한다고 할 수 있다.
