The purpose of this study is to examine the effect that crime-related media consumption has on confidence in the police. Moreover, the study investigates whether victimization experience moderates the impact of crime-related media on confidence in the police. Employing OLS regression, the results indicate that crime-related media is positively related to confidence in the police. In addition, the impact of media consumption on confidence in the police varies by victimization experience. For respondents with no victimization experience, the relationship between media consumption and confidence in the police is positive. However, for respondents with victimization experience, crime-related media consumption is negatively associated with confidence in the police. The findings imply that crime-related media consumption is an important factor in shaping confidence in the police and thereby law enforcement should work to handle their media relations to increase confidence in the police.

이 연구는 범죄 관련 미디어 노출 수준과 범죄피해 경험이 경찰에 대한 신뢰에 미치는 영향을 분 석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 더 나아가, 경찰에 대한 신뢰에 있어 미디어의 효과가 범죄피해 경험에 따라 달라지는지 검증한다. 이를 위해 전국 만 14세 이상 가구원을 모집단으로 수집된 전국범죄피해 조사 2018 설문조사 자료를 통계적으로 분석하였다. 기술통계분석, 상관분석, 그리고 다중회귀분석을 실시했다. 분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 범죄 관련 미디어 노출 수준이 높을수록 경찰 신뢰가 높은 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 경찰에 대한 미디어의 영향력은 범죄피해 경험 여부에 따라 달라지는 것으로 나타났다. 구체적으로 범죄피 해 경험이 없는 사람일 경우 미디어 노출 정도는 경찰 신뢰에 정(+)적 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났 다. 반면, 범죄피해 경험이 있는 사람은 범죄 관련 미디어에 노출될수록 오히려 경찰 신뢰가 낮아지 는 것으로 발견되었다. 이와 같은 결과는 미디어가 경찰에 대한 신뢰를 평가하는 데 있어 주요한 요 소임을 시사하며 경찰 이미지 제고를 위해 미디어의 역할을 중요하게 고려해야 함을 보여준다.
