This paper investigates the aesthetic spirit of “fragrance of bookish charm (文字香 書卷氣)” as emphasized in Lee Mun-yeol’s novel Geumsijo. Geumsijo is the only work of Korean literature that speculates about “fragrance of bookish charms” of traditional calligraphy. Lee asks the readers what true artistic spirit is by putting in contrast the artistic perspective from fragrance of bookish charms with that from exquisite artistic technique (技藝). This is significant as it encourages the readers to have a more flexible artistic perspective. The first part of the analysis of Geumsijo in the paper investigates in detail the concept of “fragrance of bookish charm” emphasized by the teacher Seok Dam (石潭). The second part analyzes the artistic perspective from the exquisite artistic technique (技藝) as mentioned by the student, Go Juk (孤竹). The third part looks into the process of accepting and embracing each other’s artistic perspective. This paper started from the question of whether the artistic spirit that Geumsijo aimed to deliver to the readers is aesthetics that lies in learning and character, or one that lies in innate talent and beauty. This is in an attempt to understand and embrace the different artistic perspectives, while developing a wider aesthetic view.

본고는 이문열의 소설 『금시조』에서 강조한 ‘문자향 서권기(文字香 書卷氣)’의 미학 정신을 고찰하였다. 『금시조』는 국내 소설 중에서 전통 서화(書畵)의 ‘문자향 서권기’ 사유(思惟)를 다룬 소설로 유일하다. 이문열은 문자향 서권기 예술관과 기예(技藝)적 예술관을 대립시켜 진정한 예술정신이 무엇인지를 독자에게 물었다. 이는 좀 더 유연한 예술관을 갖도록 유도한다는 점에서 의미하는 바가 크다. 본고에서 『금시조』를 분석한 내용의 첫 번째는 스승 석담(石潭)이 중시하는 ‘문자향 서권기’에 관한 내용을 세밀하게 고찰하였다. 두 번째로 제자 고죽(孤竹)의 기예(技藝)적 예술관을 분석하였다. 세 번째로 상호간의 예술관을 수용하고 포용하는 과정을 확인하였다. 본 연구는 『금시조』에서 전달하고자 한 예술정신이 학식과 인품을 담은 미학인가, 아니면 타고난 재능과 미의 추구인가에 대한 의구심에서 출발하였다. 이러한 의도는 상호 예술관을 이해하고 포용하면서 보다 넓은 미학적 안목을 키워보고자 하는 데 있다.
