The purpose of this study was to understand the experiences of female marriage immigrants in the process of acculturation. In particular, the purpose of this study was to find out what the meaning of cultural adaptation is based on their personal experiences. The research question is first, how do female marriage immigrants achieve mutual balance and harmony between their original culture and mainstream culture (Korean culture)? Second, what is the personal experience and meaning of female marriage immigrants in the process of cultural adaptation? For this study, a qualitative study was conducted through in-depth interviews with 6 study participants who have lived in Korean society for more than 8 years and can express their experiences abundantly. As a result of the study, first, marriage immigrants made continuous efforts to achieve a balance between the native culture and the mainstream culture by acquiring a certificate ‘self-directed’ to adapt to the culture of Korean life, teaching their children their mother tongue. Second, they were living in harmony with Korean culture by forming the relationships necessary for Korean life by utilizing the social network formed in the individual environment. Through the results of this study, implications related to their personal capacity development and the government's multicultural policy were provided.

본 연구는 여성결혼이민자들을 대상으로 문화적응과정에서의 경험을 이해하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 특히, 이들의 개인적 경험을 토대로 문화적응의 의미가 무엇인지 알 아보는 데 목적을 두었다. 연구문제는 첫째, 여성결혼이민자들은 어떻게 원문화와 주 류문화(한국문화)를 상호 균형과 조화를 맞추어 가는가? 둘째, 여성결혼이민자들의 문 화적응과정에서 개인 경험과 그 의미는 무엇인가? 로 설정하였다. 본 연구를 위해 한국 사회에서 8년 이상 장기 거주 중이며 경험을 풍부하게 표현할 수 있는 6명의 연구참여 자들을 대상으로 심층 면담을 통해 질적 연구를 실시하였다. 연구결과, 첫째, 여성결혼 이민자는 한국생활의 문화적응을 위해 ‘자기주도적’으로 자격증을 취득하고, 자녀에게 모국어를 가르치며 원문화와 주류문화의 균형을 이루기 위해 지속적으로 노력하였다. 둘째, 개인의 환경 속에 형성되어 있는 사회적 관계망을 활용하여 한국 생활에 필요로 하는 관계 형성을 통해 한국문화에 속해 조화롭게 생활을 이어나가고 있었다. 본 연구 결과를 통해 이들의 개인 역량 및 능력 개발을 주체적으로 하는 인적자원으로서의 발 전 가능성을 시사점으로 제공하였다.
