The purpose of this study is to interpret the ‘從心所欲不踰矩’ part of the words and actions left by Confucius in a modern way. In particular, ‘從心所欲不踰矩’ was highlighted, focusing on the thoughts of cognitive scientist F. J. Varella and moral psychologist D. Narvaez. ㉠ To this end, this study first looked at the existing interpretations of the phrase, but there was no significant difference in basic interpretation, but there were large and small differences in implications depending on what kind of being Confucius was perceived by the thinker or what academic characteristics of the thinker. ㉡ Subsequently, in this study, the meaning and related keywords of ‘ethical know-how’ presented by Varella were summarized, and in light of this, the ‘從心所欲’ part of ‘從心所欲不踰矩’ was interpreted in a modern way. Although Varella and Confucius's academic perspectives do not exactly coincide, it has been confirmed that they can be communicated to some extent in terms of ‘immediacy’, ‘experience’, and ‘enact’. ㉢In addition, the meaning and characteristics of the ‘ethical expertise’ presented by Narvaez were summarized, and in light of this, the ‘不踰矩’ part of the ‘從心所欲不踰矩’ was interpreted in a modern way. Although Narvaez and Confucius's academic perspectives do not exactly coincide, it has been confirmed that they can be communicated to some extent in terms of ‘ethical schemas’, ‘ethical skill’, and ‘ethical intuition’. ㉣ Finally, this study suggested that the connection between cognitive science･moral psychology and Confucius thought should be further deepened, and that reinterpreted ‘從心所欲不踰矩’ should be approached at the level of school and social (lifelong and culture) education and used in classes.

본 연구의 목적은 공자(孔子)가 남긴 언명들 중 ‘종심소욕불유구(從心所欲不踰矩)’ 부분을 현대적으로 해석하는 것이다. 특히 인지과학자인 프란시스코 J. 바렐라(F. J. Varela)와 도덕 심리학자인 다르시아 나바에즈(D. Narvaez)의 논의를 중심으로 ‘종심소 욕불유구’를 조명하고자 하였다. ㉠이를 위해 본 연구에서는 먼저 해당 구절에 대한 기 존의 풀이들을 살펴보았다. ‘마음이 원하는 바를 좇아도 법도에 어긋나지 않는다.’라는 해석에 있어서는 큰 차이가 없지만, 풀이를 시도한 사상가가 공자를 어떠한 존재로 인식 하고 있었는지, 혹은 사상가의 학술적 특징은 무엇인지 등에 따라 해석의 이면에 자리하 는 함의에는 다소 간의 차이가 있음을 확인하였다. ㉡이어서 본 연구에서는 바렐라가 제 시한 ‘윤리적 노하우(ethical know-how)’의 의미와 관련 키워드들을 정리하고, 여기에 비 추어 ‘종심소욕불유구’ 가운데 ‘종심소욕’ 부분을 ‘심(心)’과 ‘욕(欲)’의 풀이를 중심으 로 현대적으로 해석하였다. 바렐라와 공자의 학문적 관점이나 연구방법론이 정확히 합 치하는 것은 아니지만, ‘즉시성’･‘경험’･‘구성’ 등의 측면에서 볼 때 일정 수준 이상 소통 될 수 있다는 점을 확인하였다. ㉢ 그리고 나바에즈가 제시한 ‘윤리적 전문성(ethical expertise)’의 의미와 특징들을 정리하고, 여기에 비추어 ‘종심소욕불유구’ 가운데 ‘불유 구’ 부분을 주자(朱子)와 다산(茶山)의 주석을 중심으로 현대적으로 해석하였다. 나바에 즈와 공자의 학문적 관점이나 연구방법론 역시 정확히 합치하지는 않지만, ‘윤리적 스키 마’･‘윤리적 기술’･‘윤리적 직관’ 등의 측면에서 볼 때 일정 수준 이상 소통될 수 있다는 점을 확인하였다. ㉣끝으로 본 연구에서는 향후 인지과학･도덕 심리학과 공자 사유의 연결을 더 심층적으로 개진하고, 재해석된 ‘종심소욕불유구’를 학교 및 사회(평생･교양) 교육의 목표 차원에서 접근, 수업에도 적용할 것을 제언하였다.
