The purpose of this study is to find out the history and philosophy of balls. To this end, literature research was conducted. The results are as follows. First, it is the history of the ball. In the West, it was found that balls were used around 4000 BC. There are also traces of playing ball in the Mayan civilization in South America. Korean literature can be found in the story of Kim Chun-chu and Kim Yu-shin's celebration in the History of the Three Kingdoms. Second, it is the philosophy of the ball. There is a clear difference before and after the appearance of the ball. Before the appearance of the ball, sports were bloody sports, but later settled as gentle and fair play sports. The ball pursues metaphysical meaning. The ball symbolizes the moon or the sun and reveals human aspirations through the ball. In addition, the ball served as an intervention to reach physical excellence or complete beauty. Therefore, the history and philosophy of the ball make humans reflect on the world with the ball and dream of becoming one with the ball in the future.

이 연구의 목적은 공의 역사와 철학을 알아보는 것이다. 이를 위하여 문헌 연구를 하였다. 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 공의 역사이다. 서양 공 놀이는 기원전 4000년부터 이집트에서 공놀이의 흔적을 찾을 수 있었다. 중 국에서는 기원전 3000년경에 공이 사용되었고 당나라에서는 무리 지어 공놀 이했다. 또한 남미 마야문명에서도 공놀이했다는 흔적이 남아있다. 우리나라 문헌은 『삼국사기』에서 김춘추와 김유신의 ‘축국’에 관한 이야기에서 찾을 수 있다. 둘째, 공의 철학이다. 공의 출현 이전과 이후는 확연히 차이가 있다. 공의 출현 이전에 스포츠는 유혈 스포츠였다면, 이후에는 신사적이며 페어플 레이 한 스포츠로 정착되었다. 공은 달이나 태양을 상징하고 인간의 염원을 담았다. 또한, 공은 인간의 신체적 탁월성이나 완전한 미에 도달할 수 있는 중재 역할을 하였다. 따라서 공의 역사와 철학은 인간에게 공과 함께한 세상 을 성찰하게 하고 미래에‘공으로 하나 되는 세상’을 꿈꾸게 한다.
