The purpose of this study is to find out how art therapy is perceived by mothers of school-age children with intellectual disabilities. For this purpose, the focus group interview method was used among the qualitative research methods. The study participants were eight mothers of children with intellectual disabilities in school age undergoing art therapy, and interviews were conducted in two focus groups of four, and each group took about two hours of interview time. The four question steps of Krueger and Casey (2009)'s Focus Group Interviews were modified and supplemented to suit this study. As a result of this process, 4 super-themes, 12 sub-themes, and 24 semantic units were derived. First, the grounds of starting art therapy were external recommendations and voucher support. Second, art therapy was found necessary for emotional and functional difficulties, psychological identification, and self-expression of children with intellectual disabilities in school age. Third, the representative effects of art therapy were emotional stability, functional development, exposure to various experiences, and parental understanding of children in school age with intellectual disabilities Fourth, the expectations for art therapy for school-age children with intellectual disabilities were found to be group life adaptation, supplement art education aspects, and preparation for adolescence. Based on these results, future research is expected to be conducted to raise awareness of art therapy for mothers of children with intellectual disabilities.

본 연구는 학령기 지적장애 아동의 어머니들이 인식하는 미술치료에 관하여 알아보는데 그 목적을 두고 있다. 이를 위하여 질적 연구방법 중 포커스그룹 인터뷰 방식을 사용하였다. 연구 참여자는 미술치료를 받고 있는 학령기 지적장애 아동의 어머니 8명을 각각 4명씩 2개의 포커스 그룹 인터뷰를 진행하였고, 한 그룹 당 약 2시간의 인터뷰 시간이 소요되었다. Krueger와 Casey(2009/2014)의 포커스그룹 인터뷰 4가지 질문 단계를 본 연구에 맞게 수정, 보완하여 사용하였다. 이러한 과정의 결과로 4개의 상위주제, 12개의 하위주제, 24개의 의미단위가 도출되었다. 첫째, 미술치료 시작계기는 외부의 추천, 바우처 지원으로 나타났다. 둘째, 미술치료가 학령기 지적장애 아동의 정서·기능적 어려움, 심리파악, 자기표현을 위해 필요하다고 하였다. 셋째, 미술치료의 대표적 효과로는 학령기 지적장애 아동의 정서적 안정, 기능적 발달, 다양한 경험, 부모의 아동이해를 들 수 있었다. 넷째, 미술치료에 대한 기대로는 학령기 지적장애 아동의 집단생활 적응, 미술 교육적 측면 보완, 청소년기 준비로 나타났다. 이를 바탕으로 보다 나은 지적장애 아동 어머니의 미술치료의 인식을 위한 연구가 이루어지길 기대한다.
