Our picture books, which were introduced from the West during the modern period, have continued to develop. Recently, books are expanding their interactivity with readers by meeting digital technology and dismantling its physical properties. However, picture books have no choice but to maintain their physical properties as paper books due to the characteristics of pictures. Variation and expansion of the picture book format is one way to maintain the physical properties of a paper book and to widen the interactive interface with the reader. In the meantime, there have been few experiments to change the format of a picture book, but it has been steady. Typical examples are the expansion of the bookshelf using folding, the variation of editing, and the binding by folding. From 2010 onwards, picture books that change form and expand and guarantee content appear. In this paper, we selected representative books that vary and expand the format of picture book tand specifically examined how binding, cover, and paper format lead to the shaping of content and subject. Kiss and I request communication with all beings in the world and with themselves as an addition binding that weaves two books into one. Dream becoming water and The sound of crying deepen the subject by subtractive binding that separates the cover from the main text. In addition, HYdE & SeEK require the reader to explore their own inner self through folding binding and hole format. Although there are differences in degree, these books are of great significance in that they guarantee the content in a variable and expanded format, enhance workability and artistry, and strengthen the interactivity with readers required in the digital age. In addition, it should be noted that these works are secure readers of various age groups, making picture books no longer a sub-area of children’s literature.

최근 디지털 기술의 발달로 책은 그 물성을 해체하며 독자와의 상호작용성(interactivity)을 확대해가고 있다. 그러나 그림책은 그림의 특성으로 인해 종이책으로서의 물성을 유지할 수밖에 없다. 종이책으로서의 물성을 유지하며 독자와 상호작용 접면을 넓히는 한 방법으로 그림책 형식의 변주와 확장을 들 수 있다. 그동안 그림책 형식을 변주하는 실험은 미약하지만 꾸준히 있어 왔다. 대표적으로 접지를 이용한 책장의 확장, 편집의 변주, 나누어접기(병풍) 제본등이 그것이다. 2010년 들어 여기에서 더 나아가 형식을 변주하고 확장하며 내용을 담보하는 그림책들이 등장한다. 이 논문은 그 대표적인 그림책들을 선정해, 제본과 표지 및 지면 형식이 어떻게 내용과 주제를 형상화하는지, 그리고 그 의의는 무엇인지를 살폈다. 『키스』와 『나』는 두 권의 책을 한 권으로 엮는 더하기 제본으로 세상 속 수많은 존재자와, 또 자기 자신과 소통하기를 요청한다. 『물이 되는 꿈』과 『울음소리』는 표지와 본문을 분리하는 빼기 제본으로 주제를 심화한다. 또 『하이드와 나』는 나누어접기 제본과 홀(hole) 형식으로 독자 자신의 내면을 탐색하도록 요구한다. 이 그림책들은 변주되고 확장된 형식에 내용을 담보한다는 점에서, 예술성을 높였다는 점에서, 디지털 시대에 요구되는 독자와의 상호작용성을 강화한다는 점에서 중요한 의의를 가진다. 더불어 이러한 작품들이 다양한 연령층의 독자를 확보하며 더 이상 그림책을 아동문학의 하위 영역으로 볼 수 없게 만들고 있다는 점도 주목해야 한다.
