This book examines the reproduction of novels about the problems faced by Vietnamese marriage migrant women living as strangers in Korean society, which is turning into a multicultural society centered on Seo Seongran’s short novel “Paprika” and the feature novel Sseueong. It analyzed the problems faced by marriage migrant women in terms of unequal international marriage methods, alienation, objectification, and collective exclusivity of Vietnamese migrant women. International marriage of a commercial nature has created a negative and discriminatory perception that Koreans are “women who brought marriage migrant women with money from countries where they can’t,” leading to human rights violations, oppression and isolation. In “Paprika”, the mother-in-law’s abusive language, pressure on pregnancy, and xenophobia are seen, and Sseueong is revealed as a collective exclusivity of members of rural communities. “Paprika” Chuyen is recognized as a means of carrying out childbirth, housework, and farm labor, and is the subject of her husband’s sexual desire. Sseueong is targeted as a stranger who can be thrown out of the rural community at any time, being the “only property and debt to pay” of her husband, who lost his home and mother in a fire. The problems marriage migrant women face in Korean society are due to their discriminatory gaze, attitudes, and collective exclusivity. Koreans’ distorted eyes and attitudes serve as factors that alienate marriage migrant women while preventing them from settling in Korean society. “Paprika” and Sseueong reproduce the problem of alienation and isolation that Vietnamese marriage migrant women face in Korean families and communities. In particular, Sseueong accuses Korean society of prejudice and discrimination by faithfully reproducing group violence through the voices of the parties concerned from the perspective of the characters. The appearance of Sseueong, who is attacked and isolated by the entire community, shows the exclusive nature of our society. “Paprika” and Sseueong reproduce the problem of alienation and isolation that Vietnamese marriage migrant women face in Korean families and communities. In particular, Sseueong accuses Korean society of prejudice and discrimination by faithfully reproducing group violence through the voices of the parties concerned from the perspective of the characters. The appearance of Sseueong, who is attacked and isolated by the entire community, shows the exclusive nature of our society. In order to solve the problem facing marriage migrant women, we need a change in policy and consciousness that accepts cultural differences and welcomes them as our neighbors and new citizens.

본고는 서성란의 단편소설 「파프리카」와 장편소설 『쓰엉』을 중심으로 한 국 사회의 이방인으로 살아가는 베트남 결혼이주여성 재현 양상을 살펴보 고 불평등한 국제결혼 방식과 대상화, 집단적 배타성이라는 관점에서 결혼 이주여성들이 겪게 되는 문제를 분석한다. 상업적으로 변질된 국제결혼은 결혼이주여성을 ‘가난한 나라에서 돈을 주고 데려온 신부’라는 부정적이고 차별적인 인식을 낳게 하고 인권 침해와 억압, 고립으로 이어지는 요인이 된다. 「파프리카」에서는 시어머니의 욕설 과 임신에 대한 압박, 외국인 혐오 시선으로 나타나며, 『쓰엉』은 농촌 공동체 구성원들의 집단적 배타성으로 드러난다. 「파프리카」의 츄옌은 자녀출산과 가사노동, 농장노동을 성실하게 수행하 는 동시에 남편 중일의 성적 욕망을 충족시켜주어야 하는 대상이 된다. 『쓰 엉』에서 쓰엉은 화재로 집과 어머니를 잃은 남편의 ‘유일한 재산이자 갚아 야 할 빚’이고 언제라도 농촌 공동체에서 내쳐질 수 있는 이방인으로 대상 화된다. 가족과 지역사회의 차별적인 시선과 태도, 집단적 배타성은 결혼이주여성 들을 소외시키는 동시에 이들이 한국 사회에 안착하는 데 방해 요인으로 작 용한다. 「파프리카」와 『쓰엉』은 베트남 결혼이주여성들이 한국의 가정과 공동체 에서 겪는 소외와 고립의 문제를 재현한다. 특히 『쓰엉』은 서술자의 개입이 적은 인물 시점에서 초점화자 쓰엉의 목소리로 마을 공동체의 편견, 차별적 인 시선이 물리적인 폭력으로 이어지게 되는 과정을 서술한다. 공동체 구성 원들에게 공격을 받고 고립되는 쓰엉의 모습은 한국 사회에 안착하지 못하 고 어려움을 겪고 있는 이주민의 현실인 동시에 상업적 성격을 띤 중개과정 을 통한 결혼이주가 여성들에게 기회이자 위험이 될 수 있음을 말해준다. 결혼이주여성에 대한 한국인의 그릇된 인식과 차별은 우리 사회의 뿌리 깊은 가부장제와 외국인 혐오, 획일적인 문화에서 비롯된다. 결혼이주여성 은 한국사회에 일방적으로 동화되어 살아야 하는 열등한 존재가 아니라 우 리와 더불어 살아가야 하는 사람들이다. 결혼이주여성이 겪는 곤란과 갈등 은 당사자들이 해결할 수 있는 개인적인 문제가 아니라 한국 사회 구성원의 관심과 지지, 제도적 장치 마련 등으로 함께 풀어가야 할 사회적 과제이다.
