In this paper, I reviewed whether it is appropriate to view the sound value of ‘ㅿ’ as [j]. Since the ‘ㅿ’ [j] hypothesis has been proposed by Sino-Korean researchers, and the argument is largely related to Sino-Korean, this paper focused on Sino-Korean and examined the [j] hypothesis. To examine the [j] hypothesis, I looked at the process of establishing [j] hypothesis and its rationale in Chapter 2. Based on this, in Chapter 3, I reviewed the sound value and acceptance problem of Chinese 日母(Ilmo), and the explanation of ‘ㅿ’ in the Middle․Modern Korean literature, and concluded the sound value of ‘ㅿ’ was [z], and ‘ㅿ’ disappeared as [z] > ø. Until now, a full review of the hypothesis that the sound value of 'ㅿ' was [j] has not been conducted in the context of Sino-Korean. The significance of this paper can be found from this.

본고에서는 ‘ㅿ’의 음가를 [j]로 보는 입장이 타당한지 검토해 보았다. ‘ㅿ’ [j] 가설은 한자음 연구자들에 의해 제기되어 왔고, 그 논거도 대체로 한자음과 관련되어 있기 때문에, 본고에서도 한자음을 중심에 두고 [j] 가설을 검토해 보았다. [j] 가설을 검토하기 위해, 먼저 2장에서 [j] 가설이 수립되는 과정과 그 논거를 살펴보았다. 그리고 이를 바탕으로 3장에서 漢語 日母의 음가와 수용의 문제, 中世 및 近代 漢字音 유관 문헌들에서의 ‘ㅿ’에 대한 설명을 검토하였다. 이를 통해 漢字音 표기에 나타나는 ‘ㅿ’이 [z]의 음가를 표기하였으며 ‘ㅿ’이 소멸하는 경우에도 [z] > ø와 같이 소멸하였다고 결론하였다. 지금까지 한자음 논의의 맥락에서 ‘ㅿ’ [j] 가설에 대한 전면적인 검토는 이루어지지 않았던 상황인바, 이로부터 본고의 의의를 찾아볼 수 있을 것이다.
