Waehaksŏ refers to Japanese language study books compiled by those related to the Sayŏgwon, a foreign language study institution in the Chosŏn Dynasty. Korean language research on Japanese-related sources has focused on the Waehaksŏ, especially the large volume of conversational texts in the Chŏphae Sinŏ. Since the late 1990s, Korean language study books and records remaining in Japan have been discovered and reported to the academia, and since the 2000s, late modern Korean-Japanese language study books have also begun to be the subject of research. However, full-scale Korean language research is still insufficient. Therefore, from the perspective of “Korean language historical materials related to Japan,” it is necessary to conduct Korean language research not only on Japanese studies books from the Chosŏn period, but also on late modern Korean-Japanese language study books and Korean language-related records. In addition, while increasing the accessibility of related sources, translations and annotations of important sources such as Chŏphae Sinŏ will be made in order to increase the depth of the research. Meanwhile, as has been attempted recently, interdisciplinary research in various fields such as language education, literature, cultural history, and social history should be actively conducted using sources containing Korean language historical materials related to Japan. For this purpose, close collaboration with not only Japanese language majors but also with majors in various fields is essential.

한국어

왜학서는 일본 관련 한국어사 자료 가운데 조선시대의 통역관 양성 기관인 사역원 관련자가 편찬한 일본어 학습서를 가리킨다. 이제까지의 일본 관련 자료의 한국어학적 연구는 왜학서를 중심으로 이루어져 왔는데, 가장 양이 많고 대화문으로 이루어진 󰡔捷解新語󰡕에 그 관심이 집중되어 있었다. 1990년대 후반부터는 일본에 남아 있는 한국어 학습서 및 한국어 관련 기록들이 점차 더 발굴되어 학계에 보고되었으며, 2000년대 이후로는 근대의 한국어ㆍ일본어 학습서도 연구의 대상이 되기 시작하였다. 그러나 아직도 본격적인 한국어학적 연구는 많이 부족한 상황이라고 할 수 있다. 따라서 앞으로는 ‘일본과 관련된 한국어사 자료’라는 관점에서 조선시대의 왜학서뿐만 아니라 근대의 한국어ㆍ일본어 학습서와 한국어 관련 기록을 한국어학적으로 연구할 필요가 있다. 또한 관련 자료의 접근성을 높이는 한편 연구의 깊이를 더하기 위해 『捷解新語』를 비롯한 중요한 자료들의 역주와 함께 한국어/일본어 학습서 자료의 DB 구축이 이루어져야 한다. 한편 최근 시도되고 있듯이 일본과 관련된 한국어사 자료가 담고 있는 소재를 이용하여 언어교육ㆍ문학ㆍ문화사ㆍ사회사 등 다양한 분야와의 간학문적 연구가 활발하게 이루어져야 한다. 이를 위해서는 일본어학 전공자는 물론, 다양한 분야 전공자와의 긴밀한 협업이 필수적이다.
