This study aims to comprehensively understand the situation of the production of films using classical novels and analyze the flow and characteristics of the production of films based on classical novels. Through this, this study would understand the entire topography of films based on classical novels and explore new directions of the classical novel contents. First, this study explored the subjects and scope of research, expanding to animations, short films, and erotic videos, which had been excluded as a lewd genre to see the entire view of films using classical novels and diagnose the situation of the production. Based on them, this study drew up a list of films based on classical novels and examined their historical passage. Next, this study investigated the background of the adoption of classical novels as the materials of the films and the utility of the classical novels by discussing the situation of the production of the films based on classical novels, divided by period and subject matter. Lastly, through the characteristics of the production of films based on classical novels, this study looked back on the present situation and tasks of the films based on classical novels. The attempts to read the historical flow of films based on classical novels and understand their collective characteristics would be another opportunity to prepare for and contemplate on the popularization of classical novels.

이 글의 목적은 고전소설 활용 영화의 제작 현황을 총체적으로 파악하여 고전소 설 영화사를 조망하는 데 있다. 이를 통해 고전소설 영화의 전체 지형을 이해하고 고전 콘텐츠의 성장 기반을 마련하고자 하였다. 우선 고전소설 영화의 전반적인 제 작 상황을 진단하기 위해 연구 대상과 범위를 애니메이션, 단편영화, 그리고 외설적 장르로 배제된 에로물까지 확장하였다. 이를 토대로 고전소설 영화 목록을 원천 소 재별로 작성하고 그 역사적 행로를 추적하였다. 연구 결과 18종의 고전소설이 영화 의 소재로 편입된 배경과 한국영화사에서 차지하는 위상을 파악할 수 있었다. 끝으 로 고전소설 영화의 집합적 특징을 분석하여 고전소설 영화의 현주소와 과제를 살 펴보았다. 고전소설 영화사를 되짚는 일은 고전소설의 대중화를 위한 또 다른 준비 와 성찰의 기회가 될 것이다.
