This study refers to a phenomenological study conducted to find out the unique learning experience of 'late bloomer' adult learners who entered the doctorate course in their later years after passing through the long suspension of studies and acquired the academic degree while carrying out both work and learning. To this end, this study selected five adult learners who acquired the doctoral degree in their later years by working during the day and studying at night as participants in the study. This study collected and analyzed various qualitative materials, including e-mails they exchanged while studying for the doctoral degree, learning band, study daily records, and narrative description papers such as diary and memos. According to the study result, it was revealed that the 'late bloomer' adult learners had such peculiar contexts of living related to learning as management of living called the 'parallelism of work and learning', 'home and learning-integrated living' based on family members’ thorough sacrifice and devotion, and 'exchange of labor academic line community' with fellow students. Under such contexts, it was revealed that they had such experiences as the 'superhuman passionate learning' experience surpassing physical limitations with peculiar learning experience of 'late bloomer' doctoral students. They met the 'fountain of youth' learning experience in the campus of twilight, the experience of expansion learning through 'boundary crossing' and new 'making a knot'. The 'self-effacing' peak learning experience transcending time and space, the generation sympathy 'accompanying learning' experience with fellow students in various age brackets they experienced. For 'late bloomer' doctors, they recognized that the 'study for the Ph.D.' was the study above the simple acquisition of the doctoral degree. They, who were 'instrumental' learners seeking only the academic degree, have been growing up as introspective learners who find 'true' themselves through the study for the Ph.D. over the several years and pursue essence of living and precious value.

이 연구는 오랜 학업 중단 기간을 거친 늦깎이 성인학습자들이 뒤늦게 박사공부를 하게 되면서 겪게 되는 독특한 학습경험을 현상학적으로 밝혀내기 위한 목적으로 수행 되었다. 이를 위해 일과 학습을 병행하며 주경야독으로 박사학위를 취득한 성인학습자 5명을 연구 참여자로 선정하여 심층면담을 하였다. 이메일과 밴드, 연구일지, 일기와 메 모, 내러티브 기술지 등 다양한 질적 자료를 수집, 분석하였다. 연구결과 늦깎이 박사들 은 ‘일과 학업의 병행’이라는 중층적 삶, 가족의 철저한 희생과 헌신을 바탕으로 한 ‘가 학(家學)성장체’의 삶, 동학(同學)들과의 ‘품앗이 학맥 공동체’ 등과 같은 독특한 맥락을 지니고 있었다. 이러한 맥락 하에 그들은 ‘초인(超人)적 열정학습’과 황혼의 캠퍼스에서 만나는 ‘젊음의 묘약 학습’, ‘경계 넘나들기’와 새로운 ‘매듭 엮기’를 통한 확장학습경험, 시공을 초월한 ‘몰아(沒我)적’ 절정학습, 동학들과의 세대 교감 ‘동행학습’ 등과 같은 학 습경험들을 만나고 있었다. 이들에게 있어 ‘박사 공부’는 학위 취득 이상의 삶이었다. ‘도구적 학습자’를 넘어, 그들은 진정한 자신과 마주하는 ‘성찰적 학습자’로 성장할 수 있었다. 그들은 박사 ‘됨’을 넘어 ‘되어감’을 추구하는 ‘큰 학습 성장’을 일구고 있었다.
