Jeong-Ryeom (1506-1549) received attention during his time as a person who knew without learning, had clairvoyance, and became a god (神仙). Anecdotes related to his excellent knowledge were introduced from the beginning, and the wonder of his knowledge was highlighted as narrative was added to the story later. However, while admiring his knowledge, the legend contains his gloomy life, that had to leave the world, so his special knowledge in the tale has not become a prophecy containing a moral message to the community, but remains the confirmation of his personal existence. Since then, however, people have combined the life-sustaining and revenge motifs that appear mainly in existing tales with Jeong-Ryeom's life and family history; building him up as a prophetic intellectual who can do things purely for others and act morally while suffering from the problem of knowing and enduring a painful life. Significantly, in his tale the world does not return to an order in which good people are blessed. Nevertheless, he listens to the pain of others, reduces his life span for them, and attempts impossible hospitality while enduring those who come to him with hostility. These figures resemble those who endured a painful life in our culture, but eventually became goddesses through sacrifice and devotion. In this way, Jeong-Ryeom's representation touches us through this divinity and leads to reflection that we did not value the existence given to the community as a gift.

북창 정렴은 배우지 않아도 알고 천리안을 지녔으며 신선이 된 인물이 라며 당대부터 주목을 받았다. 사대부층에서는 고통스러운 가족 관계 속 에서도 신인의 풍모를 더해간 정렴에 꾸준히 관심을 가졌으며, 전승되는 이야기를 통해 정렴은 향유층의 기대와 애정 속에서 점차 예언자적 지식 인으로 표상화 되었다. 정렴에 관해서는 초기부터 그의 생이지지, 천리안, 수련과 의약술, 예 지, 음악과 관련된 일화들이 소개되었는데, 이후 일화에 서사성이 더해지 고 그의 능력과 존재에 대한 경이로움이 부각되었다. 그런데 정렴의 앎을 경탄하는 시각에는 속세를 등질 수밖에 없었던 그의 우울한 삶을 담고 있 어서, 설화 속 그의 특별한 앎이 공동체에 도덕적 메시지를 담은 예언이 되지 못한 채 개인적인 존재 확인에 머물고 있다. 그러나 이후 향유층은 정렴의 생애와 가족사에 기존 설화에서 주요하게 등장하는 연명ㆍ복수 화소를 결합시켜 정렴을 앎의 문제로 고민하고 고통스러운 삶을 견디어 내면서도 타인을 위해 순수하게 베풀고 도덕적으로 행동하는 예언자적 지식인으로 구축해갔다. 정렴 설화에서 세상은 복선화음의 질서로 조화롭게 돌아가지 않지만, 그럼에도 불구하고 그는 타자의 고통에 귀 기울여 자신의 수명을 덜어주 는 순수한 증여를 실현시키거나, 적대를 품고 나를 찾아온 존재에게도 인 간의 도리를 하며 견디어 내면서 불가능한 환대를 시도하고 있다. 이러한 인물상은 우리 문화 속에서 고통스러운 삶을 감내하면서도 희생과 헌신 으로 마침내 신이 된 존재들을 닮아 있기에, 정렴 표상은 이러한 신성을 통해 향유층에게 감동을 경험하게 하며, 공동체에 선물처럼 주어진 존재 를 우리의 욕망으로 소중하게 여기지 못했다는 반성까지 이끌어낸다.
