This study identifies the motivation of middle school students participating in playbuilding to understand the characteristics and significance of the motivation. To this end, 17 playbuilding sessions were conducted with middle school seniors, and eight of them were selected to study their motivation using Van Manen's hermeneutic phenomenological approach. As a result, it was found that the motivational experience of the research subjects was expressed or maintained by the motivation coming from the satisfaction of basic human psychological needs, including autonomy, competence, and relationship, and the unique characteristics of the art of play, audience and improvisation. This motivation of the students occurred in the process of contemplating why they were building the play and how they could implement it. In addition, the intrinsic motivation expressed here is meaningful in that it becomes a resource that leads to another experience of enjoying art in the students' lives. By exploring the motivation that students experience while building plays, this study has significance in presenting the reasons why they create plays and the direction of playbuilding for teenagers.

본 연구는 연극만들기에 참여한 중학생이 경험하는 동기를 발견하고 그 동기의 특징과 의미를 이해하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 중학교 3학년 학생들과 총 17차시의 연극만들기 수업을 진행하였으며 참여 학생 중 8명의 학생을 선별하여 그들이 경험한 동기를 반 매넌(Van Manen)의 해석학적 현상학 방법으 로 연구하였다. 연구 결과, 연극만들기에 참여한 중학생의 동기 경험은 인간의 기본심리욕구인 자율성, 유능성, 관계성의 충족에 의한 동기와 연극이라는 예술이 가지는 순간성이나 관객이라는 독특한 특성에 의해 발현 또는 유지되었다. 이러한 학생들의 동기는 그들이 왜 연극만들기를 하며 어떻게 구현할 수 있 는지를 고민하는 과정에서 발생했으며 여기서 발현된 내재 동기는 학생들의 삶에서 또 다른 예술 향유 의 경험으로 연결되는 자원이 된다는 점에서 의미가 있다. 본 연구는 학생들이 연극만들기를 하면서 경 험하는 동기를 발견함으로써 그들이 연극을 만드는 이유를 제시하고 청소년의 연극만들기가 나아가야 할 방향을 제시하였다는 데 의의가 있다.
